  • NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, who grew up near poverty, built a massive mansion in Orlando but ultimately sold it for $11 million, 60 percent below its estimated value.

The story of NBA stars who came from the streets and grew up near poverty is well-documented. It's a common occurrence not just in basketball but across U.S. sports dominated by African-American athletes.  Shaquille O'Neal  is just one of them.

The New Jersey native didn't grow up in extreme poverty, but he was raised by a single mother who, as Shaq later said, taught him and his sister discipline and set them on the right path.

As is often the case when young NBA stars suddenly gain wealth and success, they begin living luxuriously and spending money freely, a phenomenon most of them experience for the first time in their lives. As for Shaq, he bought a property in Orlando and turned it into a sprawling mansion.

" I bought it when it was 25,000 square feet ," Big Aristotle  said  on the Ellen DeGeneres show. " Then I had a ten-bedroom guesthouse built and four full basketball courts built ."

Shaq built a mansion for his family

When asked how he navigated such a large space and which rooms he actually used, Shaq had a simple answer.

"Only two rooms. The kitchen, because I like to eat. And the bedroom, because I like to sleep. That's it. I never go to the theater, never go to the gym."

This is often the case when someone acquires a certain level of wealth, they live a life they weren't used to, and as the saying goes, no matter how much money you have, you can only have one lunch a day like everyone else.

Shaq soon realized that much of this lifestyle was unnecessary, but it was also the period when he was starting a family with his then-wife, Shaunie Nelson.

"I built this house for them. But after the divorce, I would come home to a 76,000-square-foot house with nobody there but me. That was the worst part,"  Shaq recalled.

Shaq sold his mansion 60 percent under the estimated price

From the perspective of the three-time Finals MVP, no matter how much money you have, it ultimately comes down to family and the people you want to spend it with. Without them, even wealth loses its meaning.

The Windermere, Florida mansion featured extravagant amenities including a 17-car showroom, a cigar room, a wine cellar and 15 bathrooms. But selling it wasn't easy. The  Los Angeles Lakers  and the  Orlando Magic  icon had to go through five different agents over three years before finally selling the property in 2021 for $11 million, 60 percent below its estimated $28 million value.

For someone from Shaq's background, such a financial loss could have been devastating. Yet today, his net worth is estimated at around $500 million, showing that even after a storied career, he continued to earn successfully through various projects and smart investments.
