Miramax will produce and finance the film, with production set to begin in the fall. Timo Tjahjanto, who is behind upcoming action movie Nobody 2 , is taking over directing duties from David Ayer. Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer is back for the follow-up.
Statham will produce through his Punch Palace Productions shingle, along with Chris Long via his Long Shot Productions.
The Beekeeper grossed an impressive $153 million at the global box office and received generally positive reviews. Emmy Raver-Lampman, Minnie Driver, Josh Hutcherson and Jeremy Irons also starred in the film.
The Hollywood Reporter review of the film reads: "Watching the bullet-headed action star take down squads of government agents and thuggish mercenaries alike, mostly while unarmed, is fun enough. Probably even more so in Imax."
