Is 'Remain' Shyamalan's best ever? We'll have to wait till 2027 to see.

Test audiences have scored M. Night Shyamalan 's Rhode Island-shot supernatural romantic thriller " Remain " the highest of any movie in his career, and the studio has moved the premiere from this year's Halloween out to around next year's Valentine's Day.

Warner Bros. will now release "Remain" on Feb. 5 instead of Oct. 23, suggesting the film scored high with test audiences on the romantic aspects of the story. The studio was also spurred by unexpected strong advanced sales for this year's " Wuthering Heights " in what has been traditionally seen as a weak Valentine's Day time period.

Shyamalan teased the new date on his Instagram , urging viewers to "find a date" and head to theaters.

And reports in Hollywood press outlets say that test audiences who have seen "Remain" scored it the highest in Shyamalan's career , which includes hits such as " The Sixth Sense " and " Unbreakable ."

"Remain" is the product of an unusual collaboration between filmmaker Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks. They brainstormed together on an original story, including characters and premises, and then set about somewhat independently to tell that story in their own medium, though they share the credits on each.

And Sparks released his novel version of "Remain" four months ago, in October. But they have hinted in press appearances to support the book release that the endings may be different.

It appears that other details may also be different. While the book is set on Cape Cod, in the fictional town of Heatherington, Massachusetts, the movie appears to be set in Rhode Island, in a fictional town called "Nameless," based on the city name on the sides of police cars and an ambulance seen during filming. Or is that just a red herring that will be edited out in post-production?

The book version, at least, tells the story of Tate Donovan, a New York architect staying in the area to design a house for his high school best friend.

Ahead of Tate's visit, every hotel room in town is booked because of the town's Mask and Music Festival, so Tate stays at a former bed-and-breakfast, all of which has been rented for him. Almost at once, Tate meets a beautiful and intriguing young woman, who appears to also be staying at the closed B&B.

It's not long before he comes to believe that this woman is named Wren Tobin, that her family owned the B&B and that Wren is a somewhat-troubled ghost. As he falls in love with her, he decides that, to rid her of her troubles, he must solve the mystery behind how she died.

All of this is complicated by the fact that Tate had recently been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility after the death of his older sister, Sylvia. Will people think he's suffering some sort of relapse? Does Tate even know what's real?

While chasing the mystery of who Wren is, Tate also grapples with unresolved feelings prompted by his sister's passing and her deathbed revelation that she has seen spirits that find themselves tethered to the living world.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor as Tate and Wren, with Ashley Walters as Tate's friend Oscar. Also in the cast are: Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare and Maria Dizzia. And Shyamalan is credited as an actor.
