Swinton has been a regular at the Berlinale for decades, starring in 26 films that have screened at the festival in various sections off the years. Highlights include Derek Jarman's Caravaggio , which won the Silver Bear at the 1986 Berlinale, Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel , which opened the 2014 festival and 2016 Berlinale opener Hail, Cesar! from the Coen brothers. She served as president of the Berlin competition jury in 2009 .

"The Berlinale is the first film festival I ever went to, in 1986 with Derek Jarman and the first film I made, his Caravaggio ," said Swinton in a statement. "It was my portal into the world in which I have made my life's work – the world of international filmmaking – and I have never forgotten the debt I owe it. To be honored in this way by this particular festival is deeply touching for me: it will be my privilege and pleasure to celebrate, once more next February, the seedbed that is this wide-eyed and reliably wonderful gathering."

More recently, Swinton is making the award season rounds for Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door (2024), the Spanish director's English-language feature debut, in which she stars alongside Julianne Moore. Swinton just picked up a Golden Globe and a Spanish Goya best actress nomination for her performance.

The 75th Berlinale runs Feb. 13-23, 2025.
