American Airlines Just Changed Its Baggage Rules—and Not Planning Ahead Could Cost You
- American Airlines has increased the price for a second checked bag to $50 at the airport, but passengers can still pay $45 if they prepay online.
If you're a heavy packer who typically travels with more than one suitcase, your next trip on American Airlinesmight come with a side of sticker shock—unless you're willing to do a little digital homework before you head to the airport.
The Fort Worth-based carrier just announced a subtle but significant tweak to its baggage policy, officially raising the price for a second checked bag to $50for passengers who wait until they reach the terminal to pay.
The $5 hike is specifically designed as a "nudge" to get travelers to use the airline's updated mobile app and online tools . By prepaying for that second bag online before you leave the house, you can snag a $5 "discount," keeping the fee at the current rate of $45.
While the cost for your first checked bag remains unchanged ($35 if prepaid, $40 at the airport), this new second-bag penalty is American's latest effort to "streamline" the check-in process and reduce those notoriously long bag-drop lines.
"Any time we can make the travel experience streamlined and more convenient before arriving at the airport is a win for our customers," said American's Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden in a statement . This shift follows a similar formula used by top competitor United Airlinesand comes at a time when the carrier is looking to rebound after a dip in 2025 profits.

The good news? There are still plenty of ways to bypass these fees entirely. If you hold AAdvantage elite status, you still get at least one free checked bag, while Platinum members and higher can check two bags at no cost. Additionally, most American Airlines co-branded credit card holderscontinue to receive their first checked bag free on domestic flights.
For everyone else, the message is clear: the days of "winging it" at the check-in counter are getting more expensive. To keep those extra dollars in your pocket for souvenirs, make sure you've finalized your luggage count on the app well before the TSA line is in sight.
