American Airlines Is Tweaking Its Loyalty Program for 2026, With a Few Surprisingly Useful Extras

American Airlineshas revealed what's changing—and what's staying the same—in its AAdvantage loyalty program in 2026. The good news: earning status and free flights isn't getting harder, and tucked into the fine print are a few new perks you might actually use.

For the third year in a row, American is keeping its elite status requirements exactly the same. That means the number of Loyalty Points you need to earn Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status isn't going up, even as other airlines have made status harder to reach. If you earn points through flying, everyday spending on an American Airlines credit card or partner programs like shopping and dining portals, that part of the strategy still works the same way.

Where things are changing is in American's Loyalty Point Rewards—the "pick your perk" bonuses you unlock as you rack up points throughout the year. Starting in 2026, American is adding more lifestyle-style rewards, including inflight food and beverage credits, NY Times subscriptions and $250-$500 credits toward American Airlines Vacations packages.

At higher spending levels, members will also see new retail gift options. As a small centennial-year touch, members who qualify for AAdvantage status starting March 1, 2026, can also request a limited-edition 100th-anniversary luggage tag.

What's being lost? Not the big stuff. Systemwide upgrades, Admirals Club memberships and bonus miles—the perks most frequent flyers care about—are all staying. One notable removal is the Bang & Olufsen product option at higher reward levels, though American says those will be replaced with other premium retail choices.

There is one small downgrade to note: at the 100,000-point level, American is eliminating a larger bonus boost for spending with certain partners. That won't affect casual cardholders, but heavy users of American's hotel, dining and shopping portals may notice slightly slower bonus accumulation at that tier.

Importantly, lounge access isn't being cut, and there are no changes to popular card benefits like priority boarding or checked-bag perks tied to cobranded cards.

Two other additions matter for everyday travelers. First, American plans to expand miles redemptions for things like sporting events (including U.S. soccer!) and, later in 2026, gift cards (though flights still offer the best value). Second—and biggest— free inflight Wi-Fi is rolling out across most of the fleet, available to anyone with an AAdvantage account.

So, no big shake-up. If you've been using an American Airlines credit card to earn points toward flights, that strategy still works—with a few new extras, a couple of quiet trade-offs and no major rug pulls for 2026.
