Getting dinner on the table for a family of four is no small feat. As a mom of two, I'm always looking for meals that are easy enough for a busy weeknight but still feel balanced and satisfying. And as a dietitian and director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab , I have a pretty high bar for what makes a meal delivery service worth recommending.

So when I tested Home Chef for three months, I wasn't just looking at whether the recipes tasted good. I wanted to know: Does it actually make family dinners easier? Are the meals balanced? How customizable are they? And, perhaps most importantly, is it worth the cost?

To get a fuller picture, we also sent Home Chef to GH+ testers across the country to hear how it worked in their real kitchens. Here's what we found after putting Home Chef through its paces, and everything you should know before ordering.

What is Home Chef?

Home Chef is a meal delivery service that operates on a recurring weekly subscription. Customers choose from a rotating menu of recipes, and the ingredients and recipe cards are delivered to their door so they can cook at home. The service is designed to take some of the work out of dinner, including deciding what to make, grocery shopping, and measuring ingredients, while still requiring you to do the cooking.

Many recipes can be customized, such as swapping the protein, and the service offers larger portions and family-sized options. Home Chef is also sold at Kroger stores nationwide, where you can find select meals and products without signing up for a subscription.

How does Home Chef work?

You'll start by visiting Home Chef's website to sign up and enter your zip code to make sure the service delivers to your area. You'll also note any taste and dietary preferences so Home Chef can recommend meals. From there, you can choose how many people you're feeding and how many recipes you'd like to receive.

After entering your billing information, you'll select your meals from the weekly menu. I found the process straightforward and the website easy to navigate. I also appreciated that Home Chef accommodates larger households with its family plan for up to eight people.

You can filter the menu for calorie-conscious meals (625 calories or less), carb-conscious meals (35 grams of carbohydrates or less), vegetarian options, and meals that take under 30 minutes to prepare. There are also several gluten-smart and keto-friendly options each week.

The menu includes traditional meal kits, more involved Culinary Collection recipes, Express Meal Kits, Family Meals, Oven-Ready Meals, Heat & Eat Meals, and Extras such as breakfast foods, appetizers, and desserts. Depending on the meal, the "Customize It" feature lets you swap or upgrade the protein or double up on certain ingredients.

How much does Home Chef cost?

Meals start at $9.99 per serving, plus a flat shipping fee of $10.99.The minimum weekly order value is $50.95 for the Home Chef Plan and $90.81 for the Family Plan. Pricing is fairly standard for a meal delivery service, and the per-serving cost generally goes down as you order more meals. Home Chef offers additional discounts for military members, first responders, health care professionals, teachers, students, and government officials.

My experience testing Home Chef

Choosing meals

I found the menu easy to navigate, and I liked having different types of meals to choose from depending on how much time I had to cook. There were quick options like the Express Meal Kits, as well as more involved recipes in the Culinary Collection. The Family Meals and Oven-Ready options were particularly useful on busy weeknights. I also appreciated the "Customize It" feature, which allowed me to swap proteins on select meals.

There are more than 35 meals and 18 Extras to choose from each week, so I didn't get bored with the selection.GH+ testers had a similar experience, with one noting that the variety made the service useful for more than just busy families, including older adults whose caregivers may be preparing their meals.

Nutrition

As a dietitian, I paid close attention to the nutrition information when selecting meals. I gravitated toward the calorie- and carb-conscious meals and found them well-balanced. However, the nutrition-focused options make up a relatively small portion of the overall menu.

There were also several gluten-smart meals each week. These are made without ingredients containing gluten, but they aren't prepared in a dedicated gluten-free facility, so there is a risk of cross-contact. Overall, I could usually find balanced meals, but Home Chef wouldn't be my first choice for someone who wants most of their weekly menu to meet specific nutritional targets.

Ingredients

The proteins I received were good quality, and I liked that the ingredients for each recipe were packed together in individual bags. It made it easy to find everything I needed and kept my refrigerator relatively organized. The kits were also complete, aside from basic pantry staples like salt, pepper, and oil.

The produce was less consistent. Some items arrived fresh, while others were wilted or bruised. One GH+ tester had a similar experience, noting that some scallions had become slimy and a green pepper was bruised. These issues were easy enough to work around, but they're worth mentioning when you're paying to have fresh ingredients delivered.

Cooking experience

I found most of the recipes fairly simple to put together, especially since many of the sauces and accompanying ingredients came already prepared. The recipe cards are clear and have vibrant photos for each step, which I think would be particularly helpful for someone who doesn't cook often. That said, I did find some of the directions a little overcomplicated, likely because they're written to walk beginner cooks through each step.

Home Chef struck a good balance between easy cooking and getting us out of our usual dinner routine. For example, I cooked with tomatillos for the first time, and another recipe introduced me to poblano peppers paired with a rice dish in a way I wouldn't have thought to put together myself. That's one of the things I like about meal kits: they can get you out of your usual cooking routine without requiring you to come up with the recipe yourself.

How the meals tasted

Overall, I found the meals tasty and family-friendly, though they weren't as inventive in flavor combinations as some other services we've tested. Still, there wasn't a meal that the whole family didn't enjoy, which is a meaningful win when you're cooking for kids.

Some of the meals that stood out during testing included the BBQ Brisket and Chile Cheddar Cavatappi, Scallop Carbonara Risotto, Shrimp Scampi, Chicken Chile Verde Tortilla Soup, Salmon with Brown-Butter Tomato Relish, and Beef & Poblano Tamale Pie. GH+ testers were similarly positive about the food, with one saying they were "pleasantly surprised" by the quality of the products and the ease of the recipes.

How does Home Chef's delivery work?

The service currently delivers nationwide to 98% of the United States. You can check whether the service delivers to your zip code during sign-up. My boxes arrived cold and in good condition. Fresh ingredients are shipped in an insulated box with water-soluble cool gel packs designed to keep the food refrigerated, not frozen. I liked that each meal came in its own individual bag, which kept everything organized and made it easy to grab what I needed when it was time to cook.

The downside was the amount of packaging. While I appreciated how neatly everything was organized, all those individual bags and packages did feel somewhat wasteful. Most of the packaging is recyclable, though, including the partially recycled cardboard box and dividers, which can go in curbside recycling. The meal bags (#5) and ingredient bags (#4) can be recycled at locations that accept plastic bags, and Home Chef provides instructions for disposing of the other materials.

The bottom line: Is Home Chef worth it?

For busy families, I think Home Chef is worth considering, particularly if you want more flexibility than a traditional meal kit offers. I appreciated having so many different formats to choose from, whether I needed a quick dinner, an Oven-Ready meal, or something more hands-on.The meals were consistently tasty, and the variety kept us from getting bored with the menu.

From a dietitian's perspective, I also liked that there are balanced, protein-forward options, although the more nutrition-focused choices are somewhat limited. The produce quality wasn't perfect, and I did find the amount of packaging a little excessive. But for families who value convenience, variety, and customization, I'd recommend giving it a try.
