Social Security alert: SSA warns never do this with your card
From home owners loans to bank accounts, you need your Social Security number for just about every major financial move you make.
And while most people know better than to plaster sensitive information such as their Social Security number online, the Social Security Administration warns the public that there is more to keeping your Social Security card safe than hiding it.
A less obvious guideline for safekeeping your Social Security card is to not laminate your card.
While you might think laminating your card will keep it safe from wear and tear, you're actually making it less secure.
"Lamination prevents detection of many security features," SSA warns .
"... You may cover the card with plastic or other removable material if it does not damage the card."
In a safeguarding guidelines notice , the Administration states that it cannot guarantee the validity of a card that has been laminated.
Some features Social Security cards have that laminating could possibly affect is a tamper-proof background, color-shifting ink, intaglio printing, and images on the face of the card only visible when viewed at specific angles.
The Administration explains that your Social Security card is not an identification document and in most cases, card holders may only need to remember the number rather than present the card.
