I Tried 7 Popular Fast-Food Chicken Nuggets and the Winner Won by a Landslide

As a mom of four young kids in different activities, I'm constantly grabbing dinner on the go. When I forget to do meal prep , that means we're probably having chicken nuggets for dinner. After all, few foods please the entire family like those breaded popable bites.

I grew up with chicken nuggets as my go-to fast-food order, and my kids are also big fans. But while I tried a slew of different nuggets as a kid, I tend to hit up the same spot as an adult. Given how many fast food chains offer chicken nuggets, I decided it was time to branch out to see what I might be missing.

To find the best fast-food chicken nuggets, I went on a drive-thru quest. As with most journeys, I learned a thing or two along the way. One of my main takeaways? Fast food menus are ever-changing.

During my pre-testing research, I saw mentions of certain fast-food chains having chicken nuggets that I was excited to try. I later discovered that not all of that information was correct.

Dairy Queen has apparently pulled their nuggets , and Taco Bell doesn't seem to have them, either. (At least, the three locations in my area didn't.) Arby's just has steak nuggets , while Popeyes, which I assumed would have nuggets, only offers tenders. So, if you're not positive any given place has nuggets, it's worth calling ahead to make sure you don't waste time in the drive-thru lane.

Despite striking out at a few places, I still found a wide range of fast-food chicken nuggets out there—seven different options, to be exact. And while the basics of nuggets are similar, each brand adds its own special twist. While I ultimately confirmed that my long-standing favorite chain has superior nuggets, I also found some tasty new options. Here's what I learned while sampling the most popular fast-food chicken nuggets out there.

How I Tested These Fast-Food Chicken Nuggets

To find the chicken nuggets for this tasting, I scoured social media, talked to friends and did some on-the-ground research (AKA cruising through drive-thrus to confirm or deny that a brand served nuggets). From there, I picked up fast-food chicken nuggets from restaurants within a 50-mile radius of my home.

Once I had the nuggets, I did a blind taste test for myself and my family, judging each contender based on taste, texture, appearance and value. I followed that up by trying each nugget unblinded to see how they stacked up to my original perception. While I leaned heavily on my own experience as a years-long chicken nugget fan, I also took the opinion of my kids into account, given that nuggets are their favorite food group. After considering all of that, I was able to create our ultimate fast-food chicken nugget ranking.

7 Fast-Food Chicken Nuggets, Ranked Worst to Best

Everyone has different tastes, making it tough to say for sure which fast-food chicken nuggets are the best. In our tasting, there was a clear agreement on which brand deserved the top spot, but there was some variation in what people thought of the others. (I noted those differences below.) Read on for all of the juicy details on the best fast-food chicken nuggets, ranked worst to best.

7. McDonald's Chicken McNuggets, $4.50

I was obsessed with McDonald's Chicken McNuggets as a kid, and my children now think they're pretty special, too. But while McDonald's Chicken McNuggets are fun and tasty to toss back when they're piping hot, they quickly take on a rubbery texture as they cool, which is how they ended up at the bottom of the list.

If you're willing to risk burning your tongue, though, you'll notice a nice crunch from the exterior, along with a juicy interior. McDonald's also does a nice job making sure you get a uniform nugget and portion each time. But if you wait more than a few minutes after they're handed to you, the texture quickly goes south.

6. Burger King Chicken Nuggets, $2.95

Burger King has had nuggets for years, but the chain recently updated its recipe and the shape recently changed from a crown to a standard nugget. The texture and flavor are similar to the old nuggets, but the interior is a little more moist. My kids had never had these nuggets and were fans, ranking them higher than McNuggets. Burger King's nuggets have a more full-bodied flavor than McNuggets, giving them their own unique taste. These nuggets didn't lose their texture or moisture as they cooled, either, which is why I ranked them higher than Mickey D's.

5. Wendy's Crispy Chicken Nuggets, $2.50

I grew up on Wendy's, and sampling the brand's nuggets felt like a trip back in time. These nuggets have a slight kick to them, creating a unique flavor you won't get elsewhere. They also offer a solid crunch on the outside, before giving way to a juicy interior.

While I'm a big fan of the seasoning of Wendy's nuggets, my kids thought that they were "too spicy," even though I didn't think they offered much heat at all. Overall, these are really tasty, flavorful nuggets. Just keep in mind that they might not be the top pick for kiddos.

4. Sonic Premium Chicken Bites, $2.99

Sonic's Premium Chicken Bites are a little thicker and larger than some of the lower-ranked options on this list, giving you a solid amount of meat for $3. These nuggets have a nice, crunchy crust and the chicken is tender and moist. While most of my nuggets were crunchy, there were a few spots on some that got chewy (usually the parts that were toward the center of the box). These nuggets also don't have a standout flavor, although my kids seemed to like that. If you want a standard nugget that doesn't have a strong flavor, this is a good option.

3. Shake Shack Chicken Bites, $6.49

Shake Shack's Chicken Bites are packed with flavor and have the texture of real chicken vs. something that was processed and molded. (The brand says they use antibiotic-free, whole white-meat chicken breast for their nuggets.) Shake Shack coats their nuggets in buttermilk before coating them in a flavorful breading that includes a mix of seasonings, like paprika and garlic.

The flavor-packed breading gives you a nugget with plenty of crispiness and texture outside, almost like a piece of fried chicken. But while I'm a big fan of Shake Shack's unique flavor and impressive crunch, these nuggets fell short with three of my four kids. I would have rated these higher if my little ones were more on board with them.

2. KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken Nuggets, $3.49

KFC hasn't done nuggets forever—they used to feature their Popcorn Chicken, which was discontinued in 2023 to make way for the nuggets. But if you like KFC's fried chicken, you'll love their nuggets.

The nuggets use KFC's signature Original Recipe seasoning for that signature flavor and have a great crispy crunch. The chicken is moist and you get a lot of chicken in each bite. The nuggets are hearty and filling, but tasted like they could use a tiny bit more salt. Overall, they were a hit with me—and my choosy kids.

1. Chick-fil-A Chicken Nuggets, $7

Chick-fil-A Chicken Nuggets were the most expensive option I tried, but they're also high quality. Chick-fil-A makes its nuggets from 100% boneless chicken breast, minus things you don't want in your nuggets, like hormones or fillers. You can actually recognize the chicken when you bite into these, versus the gooey paste some brands mold into a nugget shape.

These nuggets have a good, crunchy exterior and a tasty, flavorful breading that both my kids and I love. The only minor gripe is that these nuggets aren't consistent in size. As a result, you might end up with some oddly-shaped nuggets or more meat in one box compared to the other. But that's the price you pay for real meat nuggets. Ultimately, I know when I pick up Chick-fil-A nuggets, everyone will eat them—and that's a major win in my book.
