Is Wicked cereal wicked good? I ate it so you don’t have to
The two " Wicked "-branded cereals currently on store shelves are the world's most generic cereal puffs with a flashy coat of paint to promote the new movie.
Unfortunately for me, they're really cool coats of paint and I 100% fell for the marketing ploy.
It's like when they come out with multiple "Pokémon" video games at once and make them just different enough that you have to get both.
Back then, it was very important to me that I had access to both "Pokémon Blue Version" and "Pokémon Red Version."
You don't understand! The Red Version had Meowth, and he was in the cartoon. The Blue Version had Scyther, which is a big bug with swords for arms.
Fortunately for me now, I work a full-time job so that I can afford two boxes of cereal that I absolutely do not need.
'Wicked' cereal | Review
As part of the building hype train for the upcoming " Wicked: For Good " movie, General Mills churned out dueling breakfast cereals branded to reflect the two main characters.
We have:
-
The green-hued Elphaba Caramel Apple.
-
The pink-dyed Glinda Good Berry
Both versions of the cereal are the same monotonous avalanche of generic sugary corn puffs. They call somewhere between the Crunchberries from Cap'n Crunch and Reese Puffs — except a bit more bland.
These really could have used some sort of marshmallow or additional cereal shapes to break up the monotony.
The Elphaba cereal is pretty straightforward. Meanwhile, the Glinda cereal is pretty vague in terms of what the actual flavor is.
Why is General Mills pretending that "Goodberry" is a good enough descriptor for a product?
I tried the cereal. It's just strawberry. Yet you won't find the word "strawberry" written anywhere on the box.
This is as big a scam as making multiple movies out of a single musical.
What does it taste like?
Elphaba Caramel Apple— When I tried this, I actually thought to myself, "Wow, it's interesting that they just made a green apple cereal. I thought they would have tried caramel apple."
Then I looked at the box and saw that, nope, I just forgot what it was called and didn't pick up a hint of caramel.
The apple flavor here is pretty tame. It falls short of Jolly Rancher levels of cartoonish apple flavor. But it's still kinda boring.
It really could have used a pop of caramel.
Glinda Good Berry— Yup, the berry here is strawberry — and it's way better than its counterpart.
This tastes almost identical to Frankenberry cereal. Coincidentally, Frankenberry was also on store shelves when this cereal was out as part of the pre-Halloween rush.
Unlike Frankenberry, it doesn't have marshmallows.
So is it any good?
Well, it's breakfast cereal. It's a crunchy, sugar bowl of sweetness. I enjoyed both. The Glinda Goodberry was better. But that's because I have the sugar cravings of a 5-year-old.
The Elphaba Caramel Apple is a C- cereal. The Glinda Good Berry gets a C. Either will do in a pinch. But the only reason to get it is because of the "Wicked" branding.
