The Worst Food Chain in America Was Just Revealed—And You Probably Won't Believe What It Is

When it comes to eating out, our general rule of thumb is nothing under 3.6 stars. It's not that you can't have the best burger you've ever had from a slick, greasy, dimly lit hole-in-the-wall, but in our experience, the reviews don't lie.
Sure, we may occasionally throw caution to the wind and wander into a place off the beaten path—and we're always open to a little bit of intrigue when it comes to where we eat. But personally, I'd rather not set myself up to find a one-off bug leg tucked between the cheese and tomatoes on my sandwich . Although, you could just consider it extra protein if you're into that sort of thing.

The moral of the story is, we take choosing where we eat seriously, and if you need further evidence, just take a look at the sea of incredibly polarized Google reviews for your favorite local burger joint. Odds are, you'll see glowing reviews praising the perfectly crispy duck fat fries or that legendary secret sauce mixed in with dissertations on why you should never step foot across their threshold.

And while local restaurants and casual chains aren't immune from the fickle nature of the court of public opinion in the slightest, fast-food restaurants like Wendy's and McDonald's often get the brunt of the venomous vitriol. But have you ever wondered which fast food is the worst of them all? Thanks to a recent study by coupon and discount site CouponBirds we finally have an answer.
To conduct the study, the company only considered chains with four or more locations and analyzed the Google reviews for more than 160,000 individual restaurants. After creating the data set, CouponBirds graded each chain out of five, using a weighted average, making sure the grading wasn't biased to restaurants that had a higher volume of reviews.
As a result, their findings led them to crown Taco John's—a major rival to Taco Bell —as the "worst" restaurant chain in America. According to the study, the chain received an average 2.61 rating out of five, which was the lowest of any restaurants considered in the analysis. Perhaps unsurprisingly, McDonald's came in at a close second with a 2.75 average rating, followed by Bobby's Burgers (2.84), Whalburger's locations inside of Hy-Vee stores (2.85) and Popeyes (2.90).
In contrast, the highest rated restaurant chain happened to be Chick-fil-A with an average 3.95 rating, and Virginia-based burger chain Five Guys taking home second (3.85). Now that our curiosity has been satiated, is anyone else craving tacos?
