For $5, New Englanders can cut down their own Christmas trees from two national forests.
The White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont allow people to get permits to cut down Christmas trees.
"Lifelong memories are built during these special times and we are happy to help with any information gathering you'll need to make this trip a safe and enjoyable one," the website states.
But it's also about the health of the forest.
"For every tree that is found, cut and carried home as a holiday fixture, you're also contributing to the overall forest health," the website reads.
Depending on the location, families can get one or two trees.
Overall, buying a real Christmas tree might be good this year as prices aren't expected to go up.
Real Christmas Tree Board found that 84% of wholesale growers said they do not plan to raise wholesale prices for the upcoming season. And some might lower prices.
"Growers are prepared, supply is strong, and most are holding wholesale prices steady this year," said Marsha Gray, Executive Director of the Real Christmas Tree Board . "This reflects the consistency of the real Christmas tree industry and the commitment of growers to ensuring that there's a real Christmas tree for everyone who wants one."
