Brown University cancels all remaining classes and exams after deadly shooting
On Sunday, Brown University officials cancelled all classes and exams for the remainder of the fall semester and said students were free to leave campus — a day after a deadly shooting killed two people and left nine injured.
The cancellations are for undergraduate and graduate student programs and include any papers and projects.
Those who remained on campus would have access to services and support, according to a statement by Provost Francis Doyle .
"At this time, it is essential that we focus our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear and anxiety that is impacting all of us right now," Doyle wrote.
"We know there will be many academic concerns about the implications of not holding classes and exams as scheduled. We will follow up with more information in the coming days. For the moment, we encourage everyone to focus on their own safety and well-being," the provost wrote.
A shelter-in-place order was lifted Sunday morning, and the campus's largest dining hall, Sharpe Refectory, reopened to all students in need of food, officials said.
A person of interest in the shooting was taken into custody early Sunday morning. The person detained is in their 30s, but officials did not say whether the person had any connections with the university.
The person of interest has not been identified. Investigators are still gathering evidence and conducting interviews, but they are not currently seeking any other individuals in connection with the shooting, Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez said.
Seven people are in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition and one person has been discharged from the hospital after the shooting, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said Sunday morning.
The shooting took place Saturday afternoon at about 4 p.m. inside a classroom of about 60 students, The New York Times reported. The students were attending a final exam review for a Principles of Economics class.
