Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and other officials announced that a "person of interest" was taken into police custody at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, early Sunday morning.
"The people of Providence should breathe a little easier this morning," Smiley said.
Seven people are in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition and one person has been discharged from the hospital after the shooting, the mayor said.
Investigators are still gathering evidence and conducting interviews, but they are not currently seeking any other individuals in connection with the shooting, Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez said.

A shelter-in-place order that was in effect Saturday night into Sunday morning ended for the entire campus, according to an alert sent at 5:42 a.m.
"However, police activity continues in areas that are still considered an active crime scene," the university said. "Be advised that access to these areas of campus continues to be limited."
Areas within the police perimeter will continue to have limited access, including the university's Minden Hall and nearby apartment buildings.
"Community members who leave those buildings will be unable to return," the alert read.
Where did the shooting take place?
The shooting happened Saturday afternoon inside a final exam review for a Principle of Economics class on campus, Rachel Friedberg, a university professor, told Connecticut Public Radio .
Although the review session was for Friedberg's economics class, she was not there, and her teaching assistants led the session.
Friedberg went to Rhode Island Hospital after she learned of the shooting. She heard an account of what happened from a teaching assistant, who was not shot but went to the hospital to support the injured students.
"The room has stadium seating with doors that enter at the top," Friedberg told Connecticut Public Radio. "He said that the shooter came in the doors, yelled something — he couldn't remember what he yelled — and started shooting."
"Students started to scramble to try to get away from the shooter, trying to get lower down in the stadium seating, and people got shot," Friedberg said the teaching assistant told her. "I don't know if they're the only ones who got shot or not."
The classroom was on the first floor of the Barus and Holley engineering and physics building, The New York Times reported. Officials said the gunman left the building on the Hope Street side.
Brown University president Christina Paxson said on Sunday morning that, while officials regularly prepare for this type of incident, "When it happens, it's just hard to believe."
"It's devastating," Paxson said.
