Chicopee PD arrest three in motor vehicle stop
Three Springfield men were arrested after a motor vehicle stop in Chicopee led to a drug bust earlier this month, officials said.
Irving Echecarria, 31, and his two passengers, Xavier Rodriguez, 22, and Ricardo Aviles, 21, all of Springfield, were arrested Oct. 2 after Chicopee Police detectives observed Echecarria's black Mercedes SUV on Broadway Street, a social media post said.
The police attempted to stop the vehicle a few days prior on Sept. 29, but it fled from detectives into Springfield, causing the police to stop their pursuit, the post said.
"As a result of that pursuit, the Detectives filed an immediate threat against the vehicles registration causing it to become suspended," the post said. "On October 2nd, the Detectives verified that the registration was in fact suspended and conducted a motor vehicle stop on the vehicle."
Echecarria allegedly was argumentative with police when police told him that the registration for the vehicle was suspended and demanded proof. A detective requested Echecarria exit the vehicle as it was going to be towed.
Echecarria, Rodriguez and Aviles exited the vehicle, the police said. The police then collected inventory of the SUV, where they found a "large sandwich bag filled with white wax baggies was located in the center console, these baggies had a brown powder substance in them believed to be either heroin or fentanyl."
Police said they later found a loaded firearm under the driver's seat. It was allegedly stolen from Lexington, North Carolina. During his booking at the police station, police also found a white rock substance in a small plastic bag, presumably cocaine, in Echecarria's sock.
Echecarria was charged with having an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, receiving stolen property, possessing a Class E drug, possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug, trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl, trafficking 36 grams or more of cocaine, a firearm violation with two prior violent/drug charges, felony possession of a firearm, possessing ammunition without a firearm identification card, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and he received his third offense of carrying a firearm without a license.
Rodriguez was charged with trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl and possession of a Class A drug. Aviles, 21, was charged with the same crimes.
