Driver faces OUI charge after driving truck over boulders in Mass. town, police say
An Essex man is facing drunken driving and other charges in connection with parking and driving on top of boulders in the town, according to police.
Anthony Altieri, 48, has been charged with operating under the influence of liquor, operating to endanger, resisting arrest and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.
On Friday, Aug. 1, around 9:30 p.m., an Essex police officer was patrolling the Town Landing on Main Street when he noticed a Ram pickup truck parked unusually on the Town Landing grass and partially in the parking lot of a local restaurant, police said. The driver, who was later identified by officers as Altieri, drove forward over the large boulders dividing the Town Landing and the restaurant.
The truck crossed over the boulders without headlights and continued onto Main Street while the officer used his cruiser’s lights and sirens to signal for the driver to stop, police said. The driver took a left onto Martin Street south and eventually stopped in the area of 15 Martin St.
A Manchester-by-the-Sea police officer responded to the scene for backup until an Essex police officer who was conducting an unrelated investigation into an unlicensed driver was able to respond, police said. When officers tried to place Altieri under arrest, he resisted handcuffing and a struggle ensued.
A short time later, three police officers were able to arrest Altieri without further incident, police said. He is expected to be arraigned Monday morning in Gloucester District Court.
