Eastern Mass. college announces free tuition for households earning under $100K

Lasell University in Newton will be tuition-free for first-time full-time undergraduate students whose families earn less than $100,000, according to a recent announcement .

The program, called the Lasell Tuition Commitment, is funded through federal and state grants, along with university scholarships. It begins in Fall 2026 and is intended only for Massachusetts residents.

"The Commitment reflects our belief that true value in education goes beyond price — it's about what students gain: career preparation, personal growth, and a supportive community that believes in and values them as individuals," the institution said on its website .

Students must file a federal aid form through the Department of Education's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and remain in good academic standing.

Room, board and other living costs aren't included.

The announcement comes after recent tuition-free pledges by other institutions, including Tufts University , Mount Holyoke College and Harvard University

A steady stream of other institutions has also announced tuition-free programs.
