Former Mass. Lyft driver arrested for raping rider in his car after driving her home, DA says
A former Lyft driver was arrested Sunday in connection with raping a rider in his car after driving her to her Somerville home the day prior, the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office announced Monday.
Brockton resident Luis Carlos Ramos Teixeira, 27, has been charged with rape and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, the district attorney's office said in a press release.
"The behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in the Lyft community or society," the ride-share app company said in a statement Monday. "We have been in touch with the rider to offer support, have permanently banned the driver from the Lyft platform, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation."
While working as a Lyft driver on Saturday, Aug. 9, Teixeira picked up a woman in Boston and drove her to her home in Somerville, the district attorney's office said. He is alleged to have gotten into the back seat of his car and raped the woman after arriving at her home.
Somerville detectives began investigating the incident later that day after the woman disclosed what had happened while seeking treatment at a local hospital, the district attorney's office said. After interviewing the victim, police identified Teixeira as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
On Sunday, Aug. 10, Somerville detectives, Massachusetts State Police and Brockton police worked to find Teixeira in Brockton and arrest him, the district attorney's office said. He was arraigned in Somerville District Court on Monday and held without bail until a Friday dangerousness hearing.
No further information about the case has been released.
