Historic Boston-area bakery moving to new location: Here’s where
The oldest from-scratch bakery in New England is getting new digs — but it’s not going very far.
Lyndell’s Bakery will be relocating from its current space at 720 Broadway in Somerville to 734 Broadway sometime in 2026, owner Bill Galatis recently told Wicked Local .
The current building that Lyndell’s occupies will be torn down and rebuilt as a mixed use development. Galatis plans to close his bakery temporarily right after Easter (April 5, 2026) and reopen before Mother’s Day (May 10, 2026).
The owner is working to create an updated space that also incorporates the nostalgia of a classic bakery.
“It will be brand-new, instead of being 70 years old, with all new equipment,” Galatis told Wicked Local.
“There will also be more display case room to show products, and customers will have the ability to see the production room because we’ll have a half glass wall from the retail area,” he said. “I’ve always been a big believer in creating some theater so people can see how things are being made.”
Lyndell’s Bakery was originally opened in 1887 by Birger C. Lindahl, a Swedish immigrant who arrived in America in 1882, according to its website . The establishment has been serving its scratch-made baked goods for generations, including their signature half-moon cookies .
Galatis has owned Lyndell’s since 2000, the website states. He told Wicked Local that the new location will continue to sell all of Lyndell’s products and introduce some new items as well as an expanded beverage program. Galatis also hopes to add some tables and chairs if the space allows.
