A Haitian man was found guilty of raping a 15-year-old female at a Rockland hotel that was being used as a migrant shelter, according to Timothy J. Cruz, the Plymouth County District Attorney.

Cory B. Alvarez, who is 27, was sentenced to 10-12 years in state prison. The state recommended 15 to 18 years, Cruz said.

“Our commitment to seeing this case through was, most importantly, about seeking justice on behalf of the child victim,” Cruz said. “It was also about ensuring that both the victim, the defendant had their day in court. My thoughts remain with the child victim in this case, her father and her family. With sentencing today, I hope that this family can find some closure.”

Alvarez was found guilty on Sept. 12 by a jury for one count of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year age difference after five and a half hours of deliberation.

During the trial, jurors heard that Alvarez’s DNA was found on the teenager. The now-17-year-old girl from Haiti living in Massachusetts also took the stand.

“He did something bad to me,” the girl said.

The incident occurred at a Comfort Inn in Rockland, which was being used as a migrant shelter, on March 13, 2024.

Police were called that night for a report of sexual assault. Authorities later said there wasn’t a pre-existing relationship between Alvarez and the girl before the incident.

Rockland police took the girl to South Shore Hospital for treatment after arriving at the hotel. The police found probable cause to arrest Alvarez and he was later taken into custody.

The hotel where Alvarez resided was part of the state‘s shelter program for homeless families, officials previously said.

On Aug. 13, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Boston Field Office took Alvarez into custody and he was held in an ICE unit within the Plymouth County House of Corrections.
