Waltham police first spotted a man on a motorized scooter going fast on Main Street last week.

When officers stopped him, they found brass knuckles, hundreds of pills and almost $68,000, among other things, in his possession, according to a statement from the department.

Joseph Keane, 36, was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, carrying a dangerous weapon (second offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, operating a scooter without a license, a motorized scooter violation and several subsequent drug charges involving possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, ketamine, Xanax, gabapentin, promethazine, clonazepam, psilocybin mushrooms and cannabis.

Keane was arraigned in Waltham District Court on Wednesday. Judge Ellen Caulo ordered Keane to be held without bail.

At around 6:15 p.m. on July 26, an officer saw Keane driving an electric scooter without a helmet on Main Street near Lyman Street, the department said in a statement . The officer saw Keane leave the road and drive down the sidewalk, passing pedestrians on foot and passing them fast.

The officer stopped Keane in front of 577 Main St., the statement read. Keane's license was suspended and the officer started to place him in custody "related to his negligent, disorderly and unsafe operation of the scooter," the statement read.

Then Keane started "to struggle" during the arrest, with officers arriving and finding a knife and a set of brass knuckles in his pocket, police said. They also found an expandable metal baton in his waistband, followed by several packages and bundles of drugs "packaged for street-level resale," the statement read.

"A subsequent search of Keane's person and the backpack he was carrying revealed a large quantity of various illicit narcotics packaged in a way that is consistent with street-level narcotics dealing," police said. "Keane was also carrying a considerable amount of cash, also bundled in a way that is consistent with conducting narcotics transactions."

Waltham police then searched Keane's room at an Extended Stay hotel on Fourth Avenue on Monday, with more drugs found in the room, which resulted in more charges

The drugs that police said were found on Keane included:

  • Several hundred orange pills weighing over 115 grams, suspected to be Methamphetamine
