Mass. man sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting his daughter, other girls with his wife
A judge sentenced a Fairhaven man to over two decades in prison on Monday on charges related to sexually assaulting his daughter and four other teen girls, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced.
Shayne Medeiros, 38, previously pleaded guilty to charges including child rape aggravated by age difference, assault of a child with intent to rape, indecent assault and battery on a person under 14 and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, the district attorney's office said in a press release. A Fall River Superior Court judge sentenced him to 26 years in prison to be followed by a decade of probation.
In February 2022, Medeiros lived in Fairhaven with his wife, Leslie Medeiros, another woman he was in a romantic relationship with and several of his children, the district attorney's office said. Police began investigating him in May 2022 after two girls, aged 13 and 14, who were friends of one of his daughters reported that he'd sexually assaulted them.
The investigation revealed that Medeiros had given the teens alcohol and marijuana while they were visiting his daughter, the district attorney's office said. He then "touched them indecently" and showed them nude photos of his wife.
Medeiros also asked the teens to engage in sex acts with each other while he and his wife did the same in the same room, the district attorney's office said. His wife was present throughout the interactions.
The teens became upset and ran from Medeiros' home at 2 a.m., the district attorney's office said. The mother of one of the teens soon called Fairhaven police, and they arrested him that evening. Police also searched his home and found evidence consistent with the teens' account of the incident.
Fairhaven police's investigation into Medeiros led to one of his daughters disclosing that he'd sexually assaulted her "numerous" times, the district attorney's office said. He began raping and molesting her when she was 11 years old and continued to do so for approximately two years. The assaults took place in locations in Fairhaven and New Bedford, and his wife participated in or was present for some of the assaults.
A fourth victim also came forward to report that Medeiros and his wife had sexually assaulted her multiple times in 2019 when she was 14 and 15 years old, the district attorney's office said. She told police that, while babysitting for his children, she was given alcohol and marijuana, then touched indecently by Medeiros and his wife, and at times was raped by Medeiros.
Police also identified a fifth victim, aged 16, who told them Medeiros had, on multiple occasions, paid for an Uber ride to bring her to his home, given her marijuana and then engaged in sex acts with her, the district attorney's office said.
"The sexual abuse committed against the victims by the defendant are despicable and clearly demonstrate a very disturbed mind," Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said in the release. " ... The lengthy sentence imposed by the Court is more than deserved."
Leslie Medeiros previously pleaded guilty to charges in connection with these incidents as part of a plea deal in which she agreed to testify against her husband, the district attorney's office said. Her sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Fall River Superior Court.
