MassDOT awards contract for Race and Cabot streets resurfacing in Holyoke
HOLYOKE ― The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has awarded a construction contract for resurfacing and related infrastructure work on Race and Cabot streets in Holyoke, Mayor Joshua Garcia said in a statement Thursday .
The long-planned project targets a central corridor in the city, the mayor said. It is intended to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity through roadway reconstruction, sidewalk upgrades, drainage and water system improvements, and traffic signal modernizations.
Planned roadway upgrades span about 1,705 feet of Cabot Street and 1,100 feet of Race Street. The Cabot Street portion runs from Race Street to roughly 100 feet before North and South Canal streets, while work on Race Street extends from Cabot Street to Appleton Street, according to MassDOT's website . The bid price is about $6.13 million.
Construction is scheduled to begin this spring and continue through 2028, the mayor said, with work pausing during the winter months.
The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, and Garcia said city officials pursued alternative funding to extend improvements on Race Street beyond Cabot Street.
"Yes, there will be some inconveniences along the way, as is common with major infrastructure projects," Garcia wrote in his statement. The finished project, he said, will serve as a "more attractive functional gateway" in the city. Cyclists and pedestrians will enjoy better conditions, and those who use public transit will see "improved reliability," he added.
