Massive Tesla recall issued amid risk of fire, serious injury or death
Tesla is recalling over 10,000 home battery systems following reports of the products overheating and causing risk of serious injury or death.
The Nov. 13 recall is for a total of 10,500 lithium-ion battery cells for certain Powerwall 2 systems, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The Tesla Powerwall 2 units are fully-integrated AC battery systems used for energy storage for self-consumption, time-based control and backup power.
The recalled products have the model number "Powerwall 2″ printed on the nameplate label on the side of the unit, the CPSC said. They were sold online and through certified Tesla installers nationwide from November 2020 through December 2022 for about $8,000.
Since the recall was posted, Tesla has received 22 reports of overheating, including six reports of smoking and five reports of fires causing minor property damage. No injuries were reported.
Customers are told to check online or through the Tesla App to see if their unit is included in the recall.
The company said it has remotely discharged (or removed energy from the battery of) affected Powerwall 2 systems that are online to prevent overheating until the replacement is installed.
