Recall alert: Play kitchen sold at Walmart, Amazon linked to toddler’s death
Over 200,000 toy play kitchens are being recalled after a toddler was killed while playing with one in 2023, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Backyard Kids is recalling 192,000 KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens and is urging parents to immediately stop using the toy and remove the dangerous hooks.
The recall stems from an incident in February 2023 when a 23-month-old in Oregon died from asphyxiation after his shirt became snagged on one of the wooden hooks while he was climbing on the back of the play kitchen, and he was unable to free himself, the commission wrote.
The KidKraft Farm to Table Model Play Kitchens are designed for pretend play for children ages three and older. They are mostly black and light gray with wood-like countertops and measure about 44 inches long and 43 inches high. The model number, which is found on a sticker on the back of the play kitchen, is 53411.
The kitchens were sold online at KidKraft.com, Amazon and Walmart from 2018 through July 2025 for between $120 and $270.
They were initially manufactured by KidKraft Inc., which filed for bankruptcy in May 2024, the CPSC wrote. Backyard Kids is managing the recall for all units. Only around 400 of the recalled units were sold directly by Backyard Kids in the United States, and 12 were sold in Canada.
"These products pose a strangulation and asphyxia hazard and a risk of serious injury or death to young children who are climbing on the counter or crawling through the opening at the back of the play kitchens," the CPSC statement reads. "Children's clothing can get caught on the hooks used to hold toy kitchen accessories, such as play pots and pans."
Customers should "immediately stop using the play kitchens" and remove the original hooks. Free replacement hooks can be obtained by contacting Backyard Kids by phone 800-882-0234 or email at recall@kidkraft.com.
