Throw away now: Instant coffee sold in 48 states recalled over fears of glass shards
Dollar General Corporation is recalling some of its instant coffee products after discovering it could contain glass pieces.
The product being recalled is the 8-ounce Clover Valley Instant Coffee with the UPC 876941004069, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The coffee has the lot numbers L-5163 and L-5164 which both have a best by date of Dec. 13, 2026 and L-5165 with the best by date Dec. 14, 2026,
Dollar General retail stores across nearly all states, including in Massachusetts, sold and distributed the coffee July 9-21. The only states not a part of the recall are Alaska and Hawaii.
The recall was initiated after a customer told Dollar General employees about the potential issue. The company says it "apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this product issue" and that an investigation is underway for the source of the glass contamination.
"Ingesting glass fragments may cause injury to the consumer, and these injuries may include damage to teeth, laceration of the mouth and throat, or perforation of the intestine," the FDA warned. "No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date."
Customers who purchased the recalled instant coffee are encouraged to toss the product and contact Dollar General via email at customercare@dollargeneral.com or by phone at 1-888-309-9030 to request a full refund.
