Recall alert: Sam’s Club fruit item recalled in 42 states over listeria concerns

Freeze-dried fruit sold at Sam's Club locations in 42 states is under a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall over concerns of possible listeria contamination.

The recall, issued at the end of July, pertains to 15-count boxes of the "Member's Mark Freeze Dried Fruit Variety Pack," according to the FDA.

"Listeria monocytogenes [is] an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems," the FDA said.

The government agency added that while healthy individuals may suffer "only short-term symptoms" such as a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain, the bacteria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths for pregnant people.

To date, no illnesses have been reported, the FDA said. The contamination was discovered through internal testing by Doehler Dry Ingredient Solutions LLC — the product's manufacturer.

New England states implicated in the recall are Connecticut, Maine and New Hampshire, as well as neighboring New York state.
