Republican President Donald Trump had just four short words in response to Democratic wins in key races across the country on Election Day.

" ... AND SO IT BEGINS!" the president posted to his Truth Social site .

The second-term president offered no further details. But it was clear that one election cycle was over, and another, quite pivotal one, the 2026 midterm campaign, was beginning.

Trump's remarks came the same night that California voters approved a redrawing of the state's congressional maps intended to favor Democrats , and on the heels of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani's clear victory in New York City's mayoral contest .

Trump, who endorsed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in that nationally watched election, had threatened to withhold federal funds from the nation's largest city because of his differences with Mamdani.

Democrats also captured the governor's office in New Jersey with a win by U.S. Rep. Miki Sherill. They also notched a win in Virginia, with former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger becoming the first woman elected as chief executive of the Old Dominion.

In Georgia, Democrats flipped a pair of seats on the influential Georgia Public Service Commission that had been held by Republicans for nearly two decades, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution .

And in Pennsylvania, Democrats held a trio of state Supreme Court seats that were on the ballot.

CNN analyst Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago, said the results sent a clear message

"The story of the night is a repudiation of the president. Everywhere you're going, Democrats are outperforming (Republicans)," Emanuel, who's been mentioned as a possible 2028 White House contender, said.
