Woman arrested after stabbing man during fight in Worcester parking lot, police say
A 22-year-old woman was arrested after stabbing a man during a fight in a Worcester parking lot early Saturday morning, according to police.
Worcester resident Makayli Elizabeth Melendez pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest during her arraignment in Worcester District Court on Monday, according to court records.
On Sept. 13, Worcester police officers noticed a large crowd yelling and pointing towards a fight in a public parking lot on Water Street around 2 a.m., police said in a press release . They soon saw a man fall to the ground as Melendez moved towards him "aggressively."
After officers separated Melendez from the man, she tried to run from the scene, but she was quickly put in handcuffs, police said. Officers also provided medical aid to the man, who had been stabbed on the left side of his abdomen.
While receiving medical care from officers, the man told them he'd never seen Melendez prior to her approaching and attacking him, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officers found a pocketknife at the scene, police said. Detectives are still investigating the stabbing.
During her arraignment, Melendez was held on $2,500 cash bail, according to court records. She is due back in court on Oct. 15 for a pretrial hearing.
