Member FAQs

Group members, below are the answers to your most frequently asked questions about Community Chats.

Community Chats are a type of conversation, dedicated for your Facebook group to engage in real-time discussions. However, unlike other conversations on Messenger, community chats are more public in nature. If your group is Public, people who are not in your group can see the community chats in the group , including the messages sent and participants.

Chats can be accessed from Messenger or Facebook:

  • From Facebook: Go to your group menu to view your group’s community chats; click any to join.

  • From Messenger: Go to your Community Inbox to view your group’s community chats; click any to join.

Where can I find and join my group’s community chats

You can invite someone directly from the chat or by sharing the chat link . If your group requires admin approval to join or join questions, non-members of the group will be directed to complete those first before joining the chat.

You can share photos, videos, GIFs, and polls, so long as they don’t violate your group’s rules or Facebook Community Standards .

A broadcast chat is a one-way means of communication for admins and moderators to reach the group with announcements and updates. All group members are automatically added, but only admins and moderators can message. Members can react and participate in polls.

Manage community chat notifications for both individual and group level community chats by following these steps:

For an individual community chat:

  • From the chat, click “Notifications”.

  • You can choose from “All,” “Mentions & replies only,” or “None”.

  • You are also able to mute the chat for a selected period of time when the chat is too active.

To hide community chats from appearing on Messenger :

  • Tap the “Manage” icon.

  • Tap next to each group to show or hide them—a circle with a check mark indicates a group will appear, and a circle without indicates a group will be hidden from your list.

There are a few reasons why this may have happened:

  • Your admin may have deleted the chat.

  • You may have received Community Standard violations, which can result in losing access to the chat.

  • You may have recently reinstalled Messenger, and need to open Messenger twice for your chats to load.

You and/or your group might not have access to chats due to one of the following reasons:

  • Community chats are not available to all groups, countries, or people at this time.

  • Your group admin may not have enabled chats for your group.

  • Your group may have lost access to chats due to Community Standards violations.

If you’re unable to join a chat, it could mean that the chat is full. You may receive an in-app message that notes why you were unable to join.

Yes, it's true that people you've blocked can still talk to you. However, you'll receive a notification when they join the thread, and you do too. Just remember that they won't be able to send you private messages.

To leave a community chat from within the chat, simply go to the chat menu and click “Leave chat”.
