BOOK

Transport Canada and USDOT are gearing up to release the latest edition of their essential Emergency Response Guide, known simply as the “ERG,” on May 1st, replacing the 2020 version.

The ERG, a reliable and trusted resource for handling hazardous materials incidents, is a fundamental tool in the arsenal of emergency responders. Its influence extends beyond emergency vehicles to industrial safety offices and more.

As with any regulatory document, the ERG undergoes revisions every four years to keep up with evolving practices and information. The 2024 edition brings several notable changes, including updates to labelling, evacuation guidance, and lithium battery response protocols.

Sections are colour-coded for easy reference, with revisions spanning white, yellow, blue, orange, and green sections. Notable changes include updated first aid recommendations, expanded firefighting guidance, and updated buffer and evacuation distances.

The ERG is not just a guidebook; it’s a regulatory obligation and a crucial tool for emergency preparedness, planning, and training. Whether you’re a driver or non-driver, this guidebook is your key to safety and compliance with DOT regulations.
