2024/25 SeasonThe Hop's pianist-in-residence joins forces with the first violinist of the Apple Hill String Quartet, Hop Resident Artists in 2022/23, for a program of sonatas. Brahms' second Violin Sonata, written during a happy summertime sojourn in Switzerland, is a radiant work, recognized as challenging both technically and expressively. Bartók's Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano is one of the Hungarian master's most experimental works, where complex rhythms and quasi-atonal harmonies prevail. The Polish violinist-composer Bacewicz wrote vivacious, sensitive and mischievous music, often described as 'constructivist neoclassicism' (her chamber ensemble works Contradizione was commissioned by and premiered at Dartmouth in 1967). Join us for this extraordinary evening featuring timeless compositions and brilliant performances.

Following her London debut at Wigmore Hall, pianist Sally Pinkashas garnered universal praise as soloist and chamber musician. Among highlights are performances with the Boston Pops, the Aspen Philharmonia, New York's Jupiter Symphony and Indonesia's Bandung Symphony. Summer festival credits include Marlboro, Aspen, Rockport, Apple Hill, Pontlevoy (France), Havana (Cuba) and HCMC Conservatory (Vietnam). Pinkas tours widely as member of the Hirsch-Pinkas Duo and Ensemble Schumann, and collaborates frequently with the Adaskin String Trio, Cuarteto Latinoamericano and the Apple Hill String Quartet.
Praised for her radiant tone and driving energy, Pinkas' extensive discography includes music by Mozart, Schumann, Fauré, Debussy, Gaubert, Martinů, Shapiro, Pinkham and Wolff for the MSR, Centaur, Naxos, Toccata Classics and Mode labels. Her most recent CD release of Sonatas by Shostakovich and Bridge was hailed as "A mandatory purchase for all pianophiles: two major works, in performances of utter power… ideal melding of strength and emotional pliancy…" by Fanfare Magazine . She holds performance degrees from Indiana University and the New England Conservatory of Music, and a PhD in Composition from Brandeis University. Pianist-in-residence at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College, she is Professor of Music at Dartmouth's Music Department.
Called "first-rate" by the Boston Globe , Elise Kuderis the first violinist of the Apple Hill String Quartet and Co-Artistic Director of the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music where she has been a resident musician since 1998. With Apple Hill, Elise has performed and taught in venues as diverse as the Curtis Institute of Music, Moscow Conservatory, Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, the Institute of Music in Damascus, Gitameit Music Institute in Yangon, the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in Lima, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the Ketermaya refugee camp outside of Beirut, and the General Store in Harrisville, New Hampshire. Elise is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and The Juilliard School where she studied with Marilyn McDonald and Joel Smirnoff. She attended the Tanglewood Music Center where she served as concertmaster under conductors Robert Spano and Bernard Haitink. As a Fulbright Scholar, Elise studied in London with David Takeno. In her spare time away from Apple Hill, Elise has performed at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem with disco legends Patrick Adams, Black Ivory and Donna McGhee.
