Learning outcomes common to the Major in Mathematics and all Minors

Students will develop knowledge and skills in the following categories:

  • Analytic
    • Formulate general principles from examples.
    • Understand the role and limitations of axioms and assumptions.
    • Interpret and draw inferences from mathematical models and results.
    • Assess the accuracy and implications of mathematical results.
    • Have a breadth of general knowledge as well as depth in at least one area.
  • Problem-solving
    • Make vague ideas precise by representing them in mathematical notation.
    • Apply a range of mathematical and computational tools and techniques.
  • Communication
    • Formulate a precise mathematical statement from ideas.
    • Be able to present a mathematical argument to the targeted audience.
    • Write logically correct proofs in an abstract mathematical setting.

Learning outcomes for the Major in Mathematical Data Science

  • Develop proficiency with mathematical, statistical, and computational models and algorithms, along with programming languages and computing environments, to formulate and execute advanced data analyses.
  • Obtain, process, clean, and organize data effectively.
  • Plan and execute data intensive investigations to find solutions to problems or help make decisions.
  • Interpret and effectively communicate data analysis findings in various formats.

For our minors (applied math, mathematical finance, mathematical physics, mathematical biology, etc.) and our Math modified with Philosophy major, we have two additional learning outcomes:

  • Have a breadth of knowledge in the associated field.
  • Understand the interactions between mathematics and the associated field and demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical concepts and techniques to problems in that field.
