UN Urges Emergency Protection for 6,000 Seafarers Trapped Near Strait of Hormuz
The United Nations has called for urgent international action to protect thousands of seafarers stranded near the Strait of Hormuz as conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), around 400 vessels carrying at least 6,000 seafarers remain trapped in the area after evacuation efforts failed to move many ships during a temporary ceasefire. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said reports indicate that some crews have been abandoned without food, drinking water, fuel, electricity, medical care, communication, salary payments, or repatriation assistance.
The UN Human Rights Office said approximately 93 crew members aboard nine ships have reportedly been abandoned at Iranian ports since fighting escalated earlier this year. The organization also reported that 17 seafarers have been killed since the conflict began.
The UN reiterated that civilian vessels are protected under international law and urged governments, shipowners, and parties to the conflict to ensure safe passage, humanitarian assistance, evacuation, and respect for the labour and human rights of all seafarers.

Middle East Flight Disruptions Continue as Airlines Adjust Schedules Amid Regional Tensions
Travellers flying to, from, or through the Middle East should prepare for possible delays and schedule changes as regional tensions continue to affect air travel. While major hubs in the UAE, Qatar and Bahrain remain operational, several international carriers have extended flight suspensions or reduced services following updated aviation safety advisories.
Airlines are urging passengers to check their flight status before departure and allow extra time at airports, particularly during the busy summer travel season. Travellers with flexible tickets may also be eligible for rebooking or refunds, depending on their airline’s policy. Those planning journeys through the Gulf are advised to monitor official airline updates for the latest travel information.
Israel Tourism Recovery Stalls as Hotel Occupancy Falls to 44%
Israel's tourism sector continues to face significant challenges, with hotel occupancy dropping to 44% in the first half of 2026, according to the Israel Hotel Association. Tourist overnight stays declined by about 5% compared with the same period in 2025, extending a downturn that began during the conflict last year.
Industry hopes for a recovery were disrupted by renewed hostilities with Iran during Operation Roaring Lion, which triggered widespread flight suspensions and a sharp decline in international arrivals. The latest figures indicate that inbound tourism remains well below pre-conflict levels, raising concerns about the pace of recovery for Israel's hospitality industry.
How to Hide the Truth on Gaza by Training AI
Since October, former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale has been quietly overseeing an operation posting hundreds of blog posts on behalf of Israel. One article, titled “The Reality Behind Gaza’s ‘Journalists’: Terror Ties, Propaganda, and the Laws of War,” asserts that a majority of journalists in Gaza were linked to terrorist organizations. Another casts doubt on the killing of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed by the Israeli military in 2024.
The key intended audience of these sites is not concerned Americans, it’s not even humans—most of the sites average a few hundred unique visitors each month. Instead, Parscale and his firm, Clock Tower X, created them as part of a $46.5 million contract with the Israeli government to try and influence artificial intelligence-powered chatbots, tools like Claude or ChatGPT.
Parscale has made his goal of influencing artificial intelligence—often referred to as “LLM poisoning”—explicit. In his initial agreement with Israel, Parscale said that he would deploy “websites and content to deliver GPT framing results on GPT conversations” as part of the contract. More recently, his team even told Axios they are “seeing success” at getting popular AI systems to incorporate information from their sites, though they declined to provide data.
And it is working, according to disinformation experts who reviewed a Drop Site analysis of chatbot queries and training data, meaning tens of millions of Americans who use chatbots are increasingly likely to receive answers manipulated by Parscale on behalf of the Israeli government.
