Rabat, Morocco —Morocco’s tourism industry kicked off 2026 on a powerful growth trajectory, reporting a 19.3 % increase in tourism revenuesfor January compared with the same month in 2025, according to the latest monthly foreign exchange indicators published by the Office des Changeson 28 February.
Tourism receipts climbed to MAD 11.65 billion in January 2026, up from MAD 9.77 billion in January 2025, reinforcing Morocco’s position as one of Africa’s fastest-growing tourism destinations.
Record Growth is the Continuation of a Strong Trend

The robust start to the year builds on an exceptional performance in 2025, when Morocco welcomed an estimated 19.8 million visitorsand generated approximately MAD 138 billion in tourism revenues— both historic highs for the sector.
Morocco’s tourism rebound over the past few years has been supported by strategic initiatives aimed at diversifying its offerings and strengthening connectivity. These include:
- Expanded international flight connectionsto key source markets across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, improving access to major hubs such as Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, and Agadir.
- Targeted global marketing campaignsto position Morocco as a year-round destination with cultural, historical, and nature-based attractions.
- Diversification of destination experiences, from historic medinas and desert landscapes to coastal resorts and high-end luxury accommodations.
The results of these efforts are visible not only in annual arrivals and revenue figures but also in rising average tourist spend and length of stay.
Impact of Major Events and Strategic Vision
The spike in revenue also reflects heightened visitor spending during major events, notably the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, which drew significant international interest and boosted tourism spend, with cross-border transactions from participating countries jumping by over 190 % compared with the prior year.
Looking ahead, Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and the Social and Solidarity Economy — working closely with the National Office of Moroccan Tourism (ONMT)— has set ambitious long-term goals. Authorities are targeting 26 million visitors by 2030, with some industry experts even suggesting that Morocco could exceed this mark and reach 30 million arrivalsif current growth is sustained.
Economic Significance and Future Prospects
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Morocco’s economy, contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings, employment, and regional development. According to economic data compiled across recent years, tourism has consistently represented around 7 % of national GDP, creating a wide array of direct and indirect jobs and stimulating investment in infrastructure.
Analysts note that with ongoing enhancements to air connectivity, digital travel services, and destination promotion — alongside Morocco’s growing reputation as a host of global and continental events — the tourism sector is poised for sustained expansion throughout 2026 and the remainder of the decade.
