Dear Dranesville Families:

It’s hard to believe we are already through the second week of our last quarter. The first Dranesville Class of 2026 graduations will happen 6 weeks from today! I visited several Dranesville schools this week and enjoyed meeting with students, staff, and families. Everyone is full of energy and enthusiasm.

I am excited to welcome back to FCPS Ms. Meredith Norris as Westfield HS's new principal. She is a former Region 5 student and native, and she served 6 years as Westfield HS's Assistant Principal, 2016 to 2020. I look forward to working with her! We will have several more new principals across Dranesville over the next several weeks.

The FY27 Budget process is heading toward completion. There remains a $40 million budget gap between the Fairfax County transfer and the FCPS FY27 Advertised Budget. I have heard from families, students, and community members around staffing, after school middle school programming, and safety. Add your priority to the budget discussion through advocacy means, shared below. The FCPS Budget Public Hearing is May 12th.

I thank the many families, current students, and alumni for sharing their frustrations, suggestions, and concerns on the student calendar, the development of an Innovation in Instructional Technology Policy, the delay of smart phones use by students, and the limitation of student screen time in the classroom. The Governance Committee, where I serve with four other Board members, is working on both the Innovation in Instructional Technology Policy and the calendar policy, with more details on this work below. For the school calendar, my priority is creating more 5-day weeks to maintain student momentum. By creating strong partnerships between schools, students, families and communities, innovation and change create opportunities for our students.

Hope you are enjoying the spring weather,

Robyn

Dear Dranesville Families:

It’s hard to believe this weekend is the start of Daylight Saving Time, and we’re already through the first week of March. I am hopeful spring weather is here to stay. March is a busy month for the School Board with work on SY26-27 SR&R (see the Work Session presentation below) and the FY27 Advertised budget.

I need your help to address our current and hopefully bridgeable FY27 budget gap by sharing your family’s priorities, especially if we can’t meet the budget gap. On February 26th, the School Board approved Dr. Reid’s FY 2027 Advertised Budget. You can view the details of the FY 2027 Proposed Budget presentation and document on the FCPS website and an overview below. The Fairfax County FY27  Budget information can be found on their website

Over the next 10 weeks, there will be multiple ways to share your thoughts with me, FCPS, our Virginia elected officials, Chairman Jeffrey C. McKay and Dranesville’s Supervisor Jimmy Bierman. Please join a Dranesville Budget Town Halls on March 23rd or 25th to learn more about the budget and share your priorities.  As we get closer to the final budget votes by the Board of Supervisors and FCPS, share your and your student’s priorities.

If you have family and friends across Virginia, please encourage them to share with their Virginia elected officials how the Commonwealth must correct the long-time underfunding of education to benefit every Virginian school district. Governor Spanberger kicked off a Common Wealth Listening Tour on how we can highlight successes and work together to strengthen public education by supporting educators and students. We are waiting for the Northern Virginia date and location, but please fill out the below survey sharing how students can thrive and Virginia’s role in their success. Please share the survey widely across your neighborhood, school, and Virginia.

Our Dranesville students impress me every day with their involvement in activities and their achievements, see the School News and Student News below. I have enjoyed watching the hard work and success of our winter athletes as they finish their season and congratulate those student athletes who won Districts, Regionals, and then made it to the State Championships. I look forward to attending the spring sports season and the upcoming spring musicals across Dranesville. Finally, if you are planning traveling over spring break, please read below on how to ensure your family’s safety.

Regards,

Robyn

Updates FCPS Updates Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to local cases that have occurred in Northern Virginia or who have traveled through our airports in the Washington Metropolitan area . In addition, we have seen outbreaks across the country, including South Carolina where over 950 people have become ill.

The best way to protect yourself or your child from measles is by getting the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Receiving two doses of MMR gives protection from becoming ill 97% of the time.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad, or if you are traveling to an area in the United States with high measles activity, please ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending your travel plans, your healthcare provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. This is a safe and important precaution that is at times overlooked.

Skyview High School Boundary Development Update

Following the completion of FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review, the process is now underway to establish an attendance boundary for Skyview High School in western Fairfax County. The School Board is expected to adopt the boundary in June 2026.

Establishing a boundary for a new high school affects surrounding schools and pyramids. The following high school pyramids will be included in this process: Centreville, Chantilly, Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield.

Elementary and middle schools that currently feed into these high schools will also be part of the analysis. This ensures aligned school pathways from elementary through high school whenever possible.

New Visitor Management System

Our schools are now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS).The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry. Visitors who choose to download the and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check in at school. If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact your school’s front office.

Dear Dranesville Families:

Last night, February 12, 2026, I joined my colleagues on the Fairfax County School Board to vote in favor of the FY 2027–2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). While no plan is perfect, I am confident it serves our community’s best interests and protects our $8.9 billion in public assets.

For too long, renovations have been dictated solely by a building’s age. Since joining the Board, I have advocated for a "condition-first" model where renovating schools should be based on their actual condition rather than just their age. This is vital for schools like McLean High School, Herndon Middle School, and Kent Gardens Elementary School.

With a new Facility Condition Assessment underway, I am hopeful we will have the data to prioritize projects where they are most needed across FCPS. I expect that this data will inform next year’s CIP, ensuring our taxpayer dollars are directed where the need is most urgent.

Thank you for your recent school bond support (passing with a 71% approval!). We continue to see the fruits of our labor right here in Dranesville even though we have more work to do. Our students have benefited from this disciplined approach. From major renovations to targeted capacity enhancements, we are seeing the results of our past planning in real time. Below, I have outlined specific capital improvements in our community schools.

Regards,

Robyn

The boundary review process for the Skyview High School  will begin soon. A final boundary decision for the new school will be made by June, but it will not be implemented until the 2027-28 school year.

Dear Dranesville Families:

I am pleased we are back to our regular schedule and hope this will be the only major weather event this school year. I know last week’s winter storm proved to be a challenge for families and for FCPS. Thank you for your patience and collaboration. I heard from constituents regarding unsafe conditions near their school and in their neighborhood; their reports assisted FCPS staff and VDOT to ensure the Dranesville District was safe for students. While operational decisions are outside of my purview as a board member, I stayed in regular contact with Dr. Reid and FCPS on the latest conditions and decisions. The Board of Supervisors is creating a volunteer group to assist our communities with clearing snow. More information about this opportunity is below.

The School Board will discuss the FY 2027 Proposed Budget tomorrow at the February 12th Work Session and the Proposed FY 2027-31 Capital Improvement Program at Thursday's Regular Meeting. Tomorrow evening, we will have a public hearing on the budget. I encourage you to watch the meetings to learn more about the FY 27 budget process and the CIP.

This week is Virginia Kindness Week Together, let’s find meaningful ways we can incorporate kindness into our daily lives.

Regards,

Robyn

These resources are designed to help keep everyone informed and safe during changing conditions. The FCPS Mobile App delivers FCPS’s weather status before all the other platforms. See below on how to get the new FCPS Mobile App and learn about the many features including the weather status notifications. At the January 22nd School Board Regular meeting, we approved the first comprehensive school boundary review in 40 years, affecting approximately 1,700 students to better balance our resources for the 2026-27 school year. January is Principals and Administrators Appreciation Month, and I am grateful for the opportunity to recognize our outstanding Dranesville administration leadership teams. Our principals and administrators play a vital role in creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments for every student. Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Proposed Budget

This Proposed Budget reflects FCPS’ unwavering commitment to sustaining excellence for our students, staff, and community.

The FY 2027 Proposed Budget totals $4.1 billion, a net increase of $197.0 million or 5.0% over the FY 2026 Approved Budget. Dr. Reid requested an additional $138.4 million, or 5.1% over the FY 2026 transfer from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. This year’s county transfer requested increase is 48% lessthan last year’s requested transfer increase and aligns closely with the fiscal forecast presented at the joint Board of Supervisors Budget Committee and School Board meeting in the fall of 2025.

  • Prioritizing competitive compensationincluding funding the increases in the collective bargaining agreements for both our Fairfax Education Unions (FEU) and the Fairfax County Federation of Principals, Supervisors and Administrators (FCFPSA) bargaining units.
  • Beginning to restore last fiscal year’s reductionsby fully restoring Special Education Department Chair positions and Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) positions at non-Title I schools, as well as a partial restoration of class sizes in elementary, middle, and high schools.

Comprehensive School Boundary Review Vote

The School Board approved the recommended boundary changes as part of Fairfax County Public Schools’ comprehensive boundary review. This was our first division-wide review of school boundaries in more than 40 years.

Key Highlights
  • Adopted boundary changes currently affect approximately 1,700 students at 46 schools.
  • The vast majority of FCPS students and staff will not experience a boundary change at this time.
  • These changes will be implemented for the upcoming (2026-27) school year.
What Affected Families Can Expect

We understand that boundary decisions shape students’ daily experiences, family routines, and the feelings of stability, community, and belonging that help children learn and thrive. This is why we approached this effort with a focus on excellence, equity, and opportunity.

Families who are being assigned to a new school will soon receive information about their school assignment for the 2026-27 school year. We are committed to supporting these families to ensure a smooth transition.

Looking Ahead

As shared at the end of Dr. Reid's amended Comprehensive Boundary Review Executive Summary , some schools and communities will be studied further within the year, with recommendations presented in January 2027.  Others have been flagged to be considered as a priority during the next boundary review cycle in about five years. Please keep in mind that being identified for future review does not mean a boundary change has been proposed or decided.

FAQs

Check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page for more information about the boundary review process and implementation.

Enhancing Safety and Security for Staff and Students

School safety and security are being enhanced across FCPS with a  new emergency management system . The system includes sensors installed in schools and a wearable emergency response button (ERB) for staff.

The button allows staff to quickly and discreetly request help and, once pressed, they provide location information within the school. The ERB will only work on school grounds and does not rely on cellular service. It is not meant to replace calling 911 but is an additional safety tool that can be used if calling 911 may not be safe or practical. You may submit questions to the FCPS Chief of Safety and Security Office.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) @FCPS Update

Dr. Reid shared, during her January 8th Academic Matters, an update on how FCPS thoughtfully integrates AI into education to expand access and support for our students. Studies show our students are already using AI , so it is essential that we begin by training adults who can guide this work responsibly. Our AI guiding principles include:

  • Humans in Control: recognize teachers as the experts responsible for learning and decision-making. AI augments, it does not replace.
  • Ethical and Responsible: we must uphold academic integrity and protect student privacy and security.
  • Intentional Adoption: continuously monitoring AI's impacts, maximizing its benefits, and implementing safeguards to avoid harm.

January is... and the U.S. Sequincentennial National Mentoring Month

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are. Learn more about Mentoring Month .

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor. All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

FCPS School Boundaries Changes Timeline

School Board Policy 8130 requires that a comprehensive, division-wide review of school boundaries be conducted at least every five years by the Division Superintendent, and that any recommended adjustments be submitted to the School Board for approval.

Through the process FCPS has conducted extensive community engagement as required by Policy 8130. The process also included feedback from the Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee, as directed by the School Board.

Community meetings were held in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 as part of Phase 1 to inform data analysis and draft scenarios. Community meetings were also held in Spring and Fall 2025 for Phase 2 to collect feedback on the draft scenarios and to inform the development of a final recommendation.

The Superintendent’s recommendation was informed by feedback received throughout the comprehensive boundary review process from the community, the consultant, staff and the Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee.

During this process, the School Board was provided updates at four Work Sessions (10/8/24, 6/17/25, 8/26/25, and 11/12/25). The School Board also modified Section VII, “Phasing of Adjustments” of Policy 8130, on 7/17/25.

  • At the January 8, 2026 Regular Meeting, Division Superintendent Dr. Reid presented the Comprehensive School Boundary Review and detailed her proposed boundary changes.
  • On Saturday, January 10, 2026 and Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the School Board heard comments on the Superintendent's recommended boundary adjustments at public hearings.
  • At the School Board meetings on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, Dr. Reid detailed her amended recommendation for the proposed School Boundary changes.
  • On Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 6:15 p.m., the School Board will hear final comments on the Superintendent's recommended boundary adjustments at a public hearing.
  • At the January 22, 2026 Regular Meeting, the School Board is scheduled to take final action on the proposed school boundary adjustments.
