FCPS Nontraditional School Programs
The Office of Nontraditional School Programs reports to the Assistant Superintendent of School Improvements and Support.
Empowering, engaging, and enriching students’ efficacy for a sustainable and successful future.
Nontraditional School Programs (NSP) will celebrate and appreciate each individual student by establishing healthy relationships in a caring culture, ensuring access to high-quality academic programming, post-graduate pathways and community resources, without exception.
The Office of Nontraditional School Programs cultivates varied and innovative instructional practices and community supports for students in varying degrees of academic and social-emotional distress. The office is part of the Office of Chief of Schools.
The Office of Nontraditional School Programs oversees specialized schools and programs, designed for kindergarten through adult levels. The office supports the implementation of the strategic goals directed by the FCPS School Board.
The schools and programs embody the vision that every child is afforded the belief, guidance, and encouragement that creates a sense of hope and optimism. For this reason, students are referred to as “at-hope” as opposed to ‘’at-risk.”
The Office of Nontraditional School Programs fosters academic progress, essential life skills, and citizenship through individual student plans targeting specific academic and behavioral improvements, social supports, and emotional guidance for students facing significant life challenges and adversities. In addition, for those students unable to attend school because of an illness or disciplinary action, the office provides oversight for homebound/based instruction to ensure the continuity of educational services between the classroom and home, health care facility, or other situation.
Every effort is made to ensure that all students experience success. Educational success for “at-hope” students depends heavily on strong educational programming, sufficient counseling support, positive family involvement, community engagement, and sometimes assistance from other Fairfax County agencies.
