Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

The end of year celebrations continue! This week we were excited to welcome students to our Neon Party to celebrate attendance. Our students danced the afternoon away in their fun glow-in-the dark gear!

We also want to send a heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to all of our 6th grade students as them head into middle school. We reminded each of our 6th graders about the light they carry in this world and encouraged them to reflect on all the "scenes" from elementary school and to create new memories as 7th graders.

We ended the week with a celebration of learning as all of our students got a chance to present their poems and writing during the Blooming Authors event. We were so excited to seeing many families join us and celebrate their student's work!

Field day is on  Monday, June 10.Our students are ready to play fun games and enjoy all the activities our PE teachers, Mrs. Eck and Coach Bee have planned for them. Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

It's been a fun week at Lake Anne. We'd like to extend a special thank you to our music department, Mr. Balangue, Mr. Hurowitz, Mrs. Cunningham, and Mr. Robertson for another lively spring concert. It was so exciting to see how much our students have grown as musicians this year!

Additionally, we'd like to thank Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Rodgerson for all their hard work and planning for our amazing Art Show! Students enjoyed seeing their art displayed throughout the hallways and showed great pride in their work. We are so excited to celebrate all of our student strengths and talents!

Finally, thank you to all the families who volunteered and the 2nd Grade Team for hosting a fun WATER DAY to celebrate learning with their students.

We are looking forward to all of the fun end of year events. Please see the calendar below.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal

Dr. Brittany Rogers, Assistant Principal

Volunteer in the Lake Anne Garden

We are almost at the end of the year and one of our goals in Eco-School was to recover our courtyards so students can go outside and have great experiences while learning Science and exploring.

Our master gardener helpers will be at Lake Anne next week and they are looking for parent volunteers to help them restore the pathways of courtyard #2. We got a terrific donation of stepping stones but they will need someone with strength to move them to their final location. Master gardeners also hope to work on adding the weed blocker around the raised beds and bringing mulch to cover the pathway from the garden by the field. No need to bring tools.

Let us know if you can come on Wednesday 6/5/2024 from 9:00 -11:00 am

If you are interested, sign up by clicking here!

🥗 Don’t Forget to Check Your Student’s Lunch Balance!

It’s a busy time of year, and we know there are many priorities on families’ plates. As we approach the end of the school year, it is important to remember to check your students’ MySchoolBucks account and pay any remaining school meal balance.

Families that earn less than 185% of poverty level qualify for free and reduced-price meals. However, an application must be completed and submitted each school yearto receive that benefit. The application for the 2024-25 school year will be available this summer.

If families have a current balance and think they may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals, please fill out the FRM application for the 2023-24 school year . Get more information about free and reduced-price lunch .

Title I Information for the 2024-2025 School Year

Lake Anne is excited to announce that we will be a Title I school for the 2024-205 school year! On Tuesday, April 16 we held a community meeting to share some information about how this will impact our school. Some of the information is shared below and if you have questions, please feel free to add them to this google form and we will address them throughout the end of the school year and summer.

Important Information:

  • Title I is a Federally Funded Grant
  • Schools are identified for Title I funds based on the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
  • The purpose of Title I is to provide all students significant opportunity to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, and to close educational achievement and opportunity gaps.
  • Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding to supplement the school’s existing programs.
  • Title I Funding Supports:
      • Implementing innovative educational programs that are geared toward students’ needs to ensure all students reach high expectations.
      • Expanding intervention and enrichment programs.
      • Additional staffing to support interventions, enrichment, and specific areas of opportunity for the school.
EOY Medication Pick-Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site  on  the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

LightSpeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements .

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Prepare for registration by gathering documents and completing forms. We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage .

Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

This week was fully of excitement as students participated in Penny Wars! Each morning students had a great time adding pennies to their grade level buckets as they tried to get the win for their grade level. Thank you to our volunteers to who are counting up all our pennies so that we can announce the grade level winner on Monday. Our students and families also had a great time celebrating at Dolphin Dash on Thursday. Our students were off to races as they celebrated a fun week of learning and Penny Wars.

On Tuesday, students in Grades 3-6 will take their Reading SOL. Our teachers have been working hard to prepare them so that they go into the test feeling confident and calm. It is important that students come to school on time on Tuesday unless they are not feeling well. You can help your child do their best on the test by providing them encouraging words and ensuring they have a healthy breakfast. Students will also have access to a healthy breakfast at school. Any student who scores between a 375-399 is eligible for a retake. If you would like your child to retake any SOL, you can help us make this a smooth process by completing the permission to retest form . Thank you for your support!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal

Dr. Brittany Rogers, Assistant Principal

Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

This week our dolphins had so many fun learning opportunities! Our 6th grade technology students participated in a version of "Shark Tank" where they created businesses that supported. Students used a variety of technology tools like Canva, Google Sites, and Google Docs to create their business presentations. Each presenter created a T-Shirt with their logo which they wore during their presentation! Our Kindergarten students took a fun field trip to the zoo where they got to apply all their learning about living things!

Next week, we are excited for Penny Wars and Dolphin Dash! During Penny Wars, students bring in spare change to see which grade level can raise the most money. Only Pennies will count towards the grade level total. On Thursday, May 2. We will celebrate all the kids fundraising through our Dolphin Dash Fun Run. The flyer below lists the grade level "fund-run" times. We welcome families to come out and cheer on their Dolphins!

Finally, thank you for all who have started dropping off your cards and notes to help celebrate our teachers! We will be  Showering Our Teachers With Praise  on May 8 in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week. If you have a card or note for our teachers, please drop them off in the front office!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mental Health in Children

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most diagnosed in children, which commonly occurs together. Anxiety is feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places, or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.

Hello Lake Anne Families,

Bravo to our third grade students and teachers for their Ancient Civilizations Museum this week. Our students have learned so much throughout the year and had the opportunity to share their learning with families this week. Thank you to all the families and staff member who were able to come out and celebrate with our students!

Lake Anne is gearing up for Teacher Appreciation Week! Teacher Appreciation Week is from May 6-10. Our teachers work so hard to support our students and school in ways seen and unseen. We couldn't be more grateful to work with such a committed group of educators. This year, we have set aside a special day to "Shower our Teachers" with praise and we'd love your help! Families can choose to create a handwritten card or special treat for our teachers, specialists, instructional assistants, or student monitors to celebrate them for all of their hard work. Please drop off your special treat in the front office and we will collect and organize all your contributions into one keepsake gift bag for our teachers. Families might choose to make a card, teacher craft, or handwritten note to celebrate our teachers and staff. Our teachers and staff also love fun teacher tools and lots of coffee! We thank you in advance for helping to make this the best teacher appreciation week ever!

Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

Thank you to all the families and community members who came out to Kindergarten Orientation. We are so excited to welcome our new dolphins next year! This week our 4th Grade students ventured to Jamestown and learned more about this historic settlement. Thank you to the team for your planning and to our chaperones for supporting your students and our school.

Additionally, our 6th grade students had the opportunity to participate in Tree Planting on April 11. Consuelo Bachelet, our 2nd Grade Teacher and Eco-School lead worked with Urban Forest to bring this unique experience to our students and help them leave a lasting legacy at Lake Anne before they "Sail on to Greatness". Thank you Consuelo and Urban Forest for this fun opportunity for our students! Check out some pictures below!

Finally, earlier this month all families received a message letting them know that next year Lake Anne will be a Title I School. We are excited about the additional support this can provide for our school and students. We are hosting a  Title I Family Information Nighton  Tuesday, April 16, from 6:00-7:00 in the Cafeteria. We look forward to connecting with you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Jill Stewart, Principal

Principal's Message

Hello Lake Anne Families,

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! Our dolphins have been excited to come back and share all of their adventures. We are starting off 4th quarter with a bang as our dolphins got to experience a one-of-a-kind assembly courtesy of mobile ed. All of our dolphins had the opportunity to visit the Sky Dome Planetarium and take a fun and exciting journey through space. A huge THANK YOU to the PTA for coordinating this memorable experience for our learners.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Solar Eclipse Information

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04PM and end around 4:32PM, with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20PM.

While witnessing such a celestial event can be awe-inspiring and educational, it is crucial that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our students above all else. Lake Anne will not be sending students outside to view the eclipse. Instead of viewing the eclipse outside, students and staff will be provided with the NASA livestream link as an option to safely observe the eclipse.

There will be some overlap of the expected window and Lake Anne dismissal. Students will be reminded to not stare at the sun, and we ask that parents remind their children that it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

FCPS has a page that shares information about Solar Eclipses at https://www.fcps.edu/solar-eclipse

It's been a fun, and busy week as head off into Spring Break! Thank you to the 4th Grade Team and 5th Grade Team for inviting families in this week for the 4th Grade Wax Museum and 5th Grade Poetry Slam!

Students also enjoyed participating in our Spring Spirit Week as they came dressed in their florals, twinning with their classmates, and of course--Pajama Day!

We hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break and we look forward to seeing students back in the building on April 3!

Safe, Supported, and Included — the FCPS Family Summit 2024

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.,at Marshall High School . The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association.

This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan . More details will be available after spring break.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources , especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

🤧 Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school whenthe student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; ANDthe student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

Techstravaganza 2024

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 20th annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PMat TJHSST.

Admission is free, food will be for sale, and we hope that you can spread the word in your school. Here is the registration link: https://tinyurl.com/techstrav24 . More information about the event can be found on our website at tjtechstrav.org .

Schools, Our Future: Community Conversations Continue

Community Conversations with the superintendent for families and community members are planned for the spring. Help your school promote the opportunities in your area and encourage families to attend to make their voices heard. Interpretation for most languages can be arranged.

Student Attendance

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources .

Student Transfer Renewal Application Opens February 15

student transfer  is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.

All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates a student is not eligible for renewal in the  Online Student Transfer Application Admin View  or the transfer type does not allow for renewal e.g. graduating, moving from one level to another, or family relocation.

Letters from the principal will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parents primary email address.

For detailed information regarding the renewal process, please visit the  Online Student Transfer Application: Renewal Process webpage.
