📰FCPS News 💵Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

☎️Family Information Phone Lines

FCPS family information phone lines are available in nine different languages. An FCPS employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.

Call the phone line with questions about your child’s education or FCPS, and someone will help connect you to resources or arrange for you to speak to the appropriate school employee. Learn more about family information phone lines .

📵New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.

A Note from your BES Administration

Dear Belvedere Families,

We had a truly fabulous week at Belvedere, and we are so grateful to our entire community for helping make it so special. It is hard to believe there are only about five weeks left in the school year. It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming students and families in the summer heat.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our incredible PTA for making Teacher Appreciation Week so memorable. From Pop and Popcorn, delicious Taco Zocalo lunches, family potluck celebrations, sweet treats, sodas, cookies, and the cutest bulldog keychains, every thoughtful gesture helped our teachers and staff feel deeply valued and appreciated. Your generosity and kindness mean so much to all of us.

We are also thrilled to share that our Family Fun and Learning Festival was a tremendous success. With beautiful weather, families enjoyed an evening filled with engaging reading and math activities thoughtfully prepared by our dedicated teacher teams. The event was full of learning, laughter, and connection, and the Seva food truck was a wonderful addition, with many enjoying delicious quesadillas and chips together.

Thank you as well to everyone who supported the Jewelry Shop this week. The joy on our students’ faces as they selected meaningful gifts for loved ones was truly priceless.

Looking ahead, our kindergarten team is excitedly awaiting the arrival of chicks, expected to hatch next Tuesday or Wednesday. A viewing link will be shared soon so families can join in this exciting experience.

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for

students

Immunization Events for FCPS Students

Our students delivered an outstanding performance, and we are so grateful to Erin Hoffman and Abner Mondoloka for guiding this talented group of musicians and making the evening such a success.

🐣🐥 The Chicks Are Here!

Kindergarten is buzzing with excitement as their chicks have officially arrived. Alongside the fluffy new arrivals, students are also carefully incubating eggs in their classrooms, eagerly waiting to witness the moment they hatch. Each classroom has its own set of live chicks and eggs, giving every student a truly hands-on and immersive experience.

This learning opportunity connects directly to our PYP Transdisciplinary Theme, How the World Works , as students explore patterns and cycles through the life cycle of a chicken. They are engaging in scientific observation, using tools and methods to track growth and change, and developing an understanding of systems in the natural world. The experience sparks curiosity, encourages discovery, and helps students think about the possibilities and impacts of living things in our environment.

The excitement has spread beyond kindergarten as students share their learning with others across the school. At one point, Ms. Dillane’s 4th grade class even stepped in for “chick babysitting” duties, helping care for the chicks and joining in the learning experience. It has truly become a joyful, schoolwide celebration of inquiry and discovery.

A big thank you to Hannah McKiernan-Campbell for organizing the event and helping ensure we can support our families  We also appreciate our presenters, interpreters, and volunteers who helped make it all possible.

Dear Belvedere Family,

We’ve had a wonderful week here at Belvedere! The warm temperatures certainly gave us a true taste of summer, and our students made the most of the sunshine and time together.

This week, we were proud to celebrate our military families with a spirited schoolwide spirit week and a special breakfast in their honor. It was a meaningful opportunity to recognize and thank those who serve our country and support our community.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming new families who will be joining us for our Advanced Academic Placement Night. It’s always exciting to meet new members of the Belvedere community, and we look forward to all that lies ahead.

Tomorrow, we’re excited for one of our outdoor field trips to Turkey Run Park in McLean, VA. We would love for families to join us, please see this newsletter for more details.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!

Special Visit From Dr. Reid

Belvedere had a very special visitor this week! FCPS Superintendent Dr. Reid came on Tuesday to see all the wonderful things happening here at Belvedere.

She was greeted by our 5th grade SCA representatives, who represented our school with confidence and leadership. During her time in the building, she visited several classrooms and saw a variety of engaging learning experiences.

In first grade, students were writing narrative pieces about their spring break. In fourth grade, students were launching their geometry unit by identifying key vocabulary such as lines, angles, rays, points, and line segments in real-world images. She also visited the gym, where third graders were excited to begin their basketball unit in physical education.

We are proud to showcase the meaningful learning and strong student voice happening every day at Belvedere Elementary!

No School April 21st

📝Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

AAP Orientation Success

On Thursday evening, we had the pleasure of welcoming many prospective Belvedere families to our school community. Students and their families from seven different elementary schools visited to learn more about the Advanced Academic Program (AAP) at Belvedere and to take a tour of the building as they consider their next steps.

Guests heard from current students who once made the same transition and are now thriving here. Their stories helped reassure families that, while moving to a new school can feel uncertain, it can also be an exciting and rewarding experience.

At Belvedere, students benefit from not only full-time AAP services, but also the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), creating a rich and engaging learning environment.

We are excited to welcome these new students and families and look forward to having them join our community next year.

A Note from your BES Administration

Dear Belvedere Family,

We can’t believe how quickly this week has flown by, and even more so, that we are already entering the final quarter of the school year! Time truly is flying.

Even with a shorter week, bookended by two school planning days, it has been a meaningful and productive time for both our staff and students. Our teachers used planning days to collaborate and prepare engaging learning experiences, and it was wonderful to see students jump right back into their routines during our three days together.

As we move into Quarter 4, there will be a number of important assessments taking place as part of end-of-year learning. Your child’s grade level team will be sharing specific dates and details in their upcoming newsletters, so please be on the lookout.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support. We hope you enjoy the long weekend ahead and take some time to rest and recharge.

Warm regards,

Cecilia Vanderhye, Tara Boone, Kelly Cabezas

5th Grade Field Trip

Our 5th grade students recently visited Bladensburg Waterfront Park for an exciting, hands-on learning experience all about wetlands and their important role in our environment. During their trip, students explored how wetlands support the health of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding ecosystems. They also learned about wetland plants and animals, pollution, erosion, and watersheds, including how water moves through our environment and impacts local rivers.

One of the highlights of the day was a hands-on science activity where students designed and built their own model wetlands, giving them a deeper understanding of how these natural systems work. Students also enjoyed a boat tour, allowing them to explore river habitats and observe wetlands up close.

It was a meaningful and engaging experience that brought science to life and helped students better understand the importance of protecting our natural resources!

A Note from your BES Administration

Dear Belvedere Family,

What a wonderful week we have had! We packed so much into just a few days!

Our kindergarten students did an amazing job presenting their museums. It was such a joy to see our youngest learners confidently sharing their knowledge with peers and adults. Belvedere Ballers brought plenty of energy and excitement, and the kids clearly had a blast. The Justice Pyramid Art Show was also a great success, showcasing the many talented artists in our school. In second grade, students and families enjoyed a cultural feast filled with delicious food, beautiful attire, and meaningful celebration.

A heartfelt thank you to SCA for organizing such a fun Spirit Week. Your efforts helped create excitement, connection, and school pride for our community.

And now, we have arrived at spring break! I know everyone is ready for a well-deserved week to rest, recharge, and enjoy time doing whatever fills your cup, whether that means relaxing, traveling, spending time with loved ones, or simply slowing down.

Enjoy every moment of spring break!

April Early Release Wednesday Cancelled

Tuesday, April 21, is now a teacher workday and staff development day because of a recently announced special election that will impact all FCPS schools.

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.Read Dr. Reid’s letter to elementary parents for more details.

Kindergarten Exhibitions

The energy in our Kindergarten classrooms has been incredible! In February, students began their Primary Years Programme (PYP) unit, Where We Are in Place and Time , diving into an inquiry about history, culture, and how people live and change over time.

Through exploring timelines, artifacts, and classroom discussions, students investigated the connections between the past and present. Their curiosity quickly grew, and so did their excitement to learn more. Students eagerly shared their ideas, asked thoughtful questions, and took pride in contributing to class displays and projects.

As their engagement deepened, students’ curiosity about Powhatan life in the 17th century naturally grew into a desire to share what they were learning with others. Teachers recognized this excitement and supported students in turning their interests into meaningful, authentic exhibition experiences.

  • Mrs. Wille’s class explored toys and tools, creating a museum to teach others about daily life.
  • Mrs. Symolon’s class focused on food, learning how it was cooked and preserved.
  • Mrs. M&M’s class built a Yehakin to demonstrate what homes were like during that time.

Students created detailed replicas of artifacts and confidently presented their learning, answering questions and teaching others about Powhatan life. It was inspiring to see their knowledge, creativity, and confidence on display.

This work is a powerful example of the meaningful, student-centered learning happening every day at Belvedere through the Primary Years Programme.

2nd Grade Cultural Feast

Our 2nd Grade Family Culture Feast was a truly memorable celebration of learning, community, and identity!

In the weeks leading up to the event, students explored their heritage and family traditions, diving into meaningful conversations about culture, history, and what makes each of us unique. They proudly created posters to showcase their learning, highlighting important aspects of their backgrounds and the stories that shape who they are.

The celebration came to life as families joined us, transforming our space into a vibrant gathering filled with sharing, storytelling, and incredible cultural foods. Students had the opportunity to teach others about their traditions, while also learning from their classmates and families. The sense of pride and excitement was evident in every conversation, display, and dish.

Moments like these remind us of the power of connection and the importance of honoring the diverse experiences within our school community. It was a joyful, meaningful event that brought everyone together in the best way

Check out our Instagram Reel to see even more!

Justice Pyramid Art Show 🎨

Belvedere was proudly represented at the Justice Pyramid Art Show, where artwork from 103 of our talented student artists was on display. We are incredibly proud of their creativity and hard work, which truly showcased the strength of our school’s art program. We are also deeply grateful to our dedicated art teachers, Tania Guzman and Fran Oviedo, whose passion and commitment make these opportunities possible and inspire our students every day.

📰FCPS News ⛈️FCPS Commitment to Weather Safety

At FCPS, the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our highest priority — no matter the season. In extreme cold, we monitor National Weather Service (NWS) guidance, adjust outdoor activities, and ensure our buildings are warm and secure. In extreme heat, we modify or cancel outdoor activities, use on-site measurements to guide athletic decisions, and promote hydration and cooling breaks.

FCPS has plans in place to provide guidance during severe weather, including storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Decisions are informed by industry best practices, weather alerts, and a commitment to keeping our school community safe and healthy year-round. Read more about weather safety , including the differences between an advisory, watch, and warning.

💰Provide the County Government With Feedback on its Budget

About 70% of the FCPS budget comes from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors is reviewing the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Advertised Budget and considering possible adjustments before adoption in May. Opportunities to provide feedback to the county include Budget Town Hall Meetings airing on Channel 16 on Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m., (Springfield District) and Friday, April 10, at 6 p.m., (Franconia District).

You can also provide your input during the county’s Budget public hearings on Tuesday, April 14 , at 4 p.m., and Wednesday, April 15 , and Thursday, April 16 , at 3 p.m. at the Government Center Board Auditorium. Register in advance to speak

Visit the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors website to learn more about the county’s FY 2027 Budget.

🎤Community Conversations: Share Your Thoughts With Dr. Reid

Keeping Students Healthy Fairfax County Health Department Measles Update

Measles is a highly contagious virus that infects 9 out of 10 people who are exposed, if unvaccinated or not immune. It has been in the news lately due to cases in Northern Virginia and among people who have traveled through local airports.

If your spring break or summer plans include traveling abroad or to an area in the United States with high measles activity, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages you to ensure your family is protected. Children 12 months and older should have 1 or 2 doses before traveling. Depending on your specific travel plans, your health care provider may also advise you to vaccinate infants 6 to 11 months old. Sleep isn’t “extra,” it’s essential. 😴

Sleep Awareness Week is a great reminder how sleep supports physical and mental health, helps the body recover and repair, and supports learning, memory, and mood.

A few strategies that can help people sleep longer and sleep better:

  •  Same bed/wake times each day
  •  A calming wind-down routine
  • A dark, quiet, cool room (60-67° is ideal)
  • Exercise earlier in the day (not within 2 hours of bedtime)

Our first graders had a memorable field trip to Lincoln’s Cottage , where they explored the power of ideas through the program In Lincoln’s Hat. Students learned how President Abraham Lincoln tucked important notes inside his famous stovepipe hat and used that creative habit as inspiration for their own thinking. After listening to the story Abe Lincoln’s Hat , they reflected on their own values and big ideas, then created a special place to keep their own powerful thoughts. It was a meaningful day filled with imagination, problem solving, and a little bit of presidential history.

A Thinking Routine is a set of questions or a brief sequence of steps used to scaffold and support student thinking. Thinking Routines deepen students’ thinking and to help make that thinking “visible.” They are a big part of the work we do here at Belvedere in helping our students engage in new learning.  Check out some examples of our students' Thinking Routines:

A Message from the Justice Pyramid

Working as a collaborative community, we cultivate a strong sense of belonging and joy, fostering high expectations while providing access to opportunities that fuel the growth and success of every student, empowering families to thrive. The Justice Pyramid is proud to celebrate one of the many ways we live this commitment and come together to ensure our students feel that strong sense of belonging.

In January, the counselors from Glasgow Middle School traveled to Bailey’s Upper, Belvidere, Beech Tree, Sleepy Hollow, Parklawn, and Glen Forest to meet our 5th graders where they are. During these visits, counselors shared information about middle school, answered thoughtful questions, and helped launch the exciting transition process.

Next, students will select their courses and take a tour of Glasgow as they take the next steps toward becoming Justice Wolves. We love our Justice Pyramid Community and are grateful for the intentional ways we work together to support, welcome, and uplift our students every step of the way.

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. At 707-916-6800. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

National School Breakfast Week Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
