Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

It’s hard to believe we are entering the final stretch of the school year, with less than a month remaining!

SOL testing results are available through SIS ParentVUE and will continue to update each Wednesday and Friday. As you talk with your child about their scores, we encourage you to keep their individual personality and needs in mind. Some students are eager to discuss their results, while others may benefit more from focusing on their overall growth and accomplishments this year.

Today is also the final day to submit parent input for the 2026-2027 school year. If you have not yet completed the form, please do so today. As always, feel free to reach out if there is any additional information you would like to share as we begin planning for next year.

Have a wonderful weekend!

FCPS News Budget Update

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Read Dr. Reid’s message to the community for more information on the budget process and budget priorities .

New Cell Phone Policy

New Cellphone Policy Starts July 1

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) . The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.More details are available on the FCPS Cellphone Policy webpage

Other SR&R Changes for the 2026-27 School Year

Visit the FCPS website or the School Board agenda to learn about additional updates, including:

  • Added guidance and procedures for in-school and out-of-school suspensions and discipline investigations, including supports for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
  • Expanded guidance and standardized disciplinary procedures (“Universal Grade Matrices”) related to harassment, hate speech, discriminatory behavior, and Title IX reporting requirements.
  • Responses to incidents involving intimate images, fighting, physical aggression, object throwing, and drug policy violations.
Attendance

Finish the School Year With Strong Attendance!

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE . Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact your child’s school so staff can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

This week at Canterbury Woods, we held an exciting pep rally to officially roll out our new Vision and Mission! This was a truly collaborative process that included input from all of our stakeholders staff, students, and families as we worked together to define what we want our school community to embody and achieve.

Our student leadership groups, including SCA, Patrols, and Student Ambassadors, played an important role in bringing the mission to life by developing a fun call and response that helped students learn and remember  in a pep rally style assembly atmosphere. It was wonderful to see our students so engaged and proud of the work we accomplished together.

We encourage you to take a moment to review our new Vision and Mission above. We are excited for the future of Canterbury Woods and look forward to continuing this work together as one school community!

This week we celebrated our teachers! Their dedication is essential to our students' growth and success. We're thankful for all our amazing CWES staff who create such a special environment. A big thank you to our PTA and families who helped us celebrate our teachers! Your support was truly appreciated.

Reminder:Wednesday, May 13th will be our last early release Wednesday of the school year. Students will be dismissed at 1:05 PM, following the same dismissal procedure as March. If you need to change your student's dismissal plans, please call the office at (703) 764-5600. The online transportation change form will be unavailable.

Wishing a very Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mothers in our CWES community!

Food Allergies

FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

April is Autism Acceptance Month

In celebration of Autism Acceptance Month, our school counselors have been facilitating conversations on autism and neurodiversity in every classroom. Grades K-3 are reading the book “Bitsy Bat, School Star” by Kaz Windness. Grades 4-6 are exploring a variety of resources, such as media on Temple Grandin, an autistic animal scientist who has transformed livestock welfare practices. Many classes have engaged in these conversations already and by the end of next week Ms. Mihalick and Ms. Wilson will visit all remaining classrooms. If you have questions about these conversations don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school counselor.

To continue this important conversation at home, consider discussing the following as a family:

  • What is neurodiversity?
  • What is the difference between awareness and acceptance?
  • Discuss this quote by Sarah Hendrickx, autistic author and advocate: “Autism is not a processing error. It’s a different operating system.”
  • How can we show kindness and inclusion to someone whose brain operates differently than our own?

Music: Not Impossible Assembly with students from the Woodson Orchestra!

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

This week was a busy and memorable one at Canterbury Woods! On Tuesday, we were proud to celebrate our talented student artists at the Woodson Pyramid Art Show, where selected students from across the pyramid had the opportunity to display their incredible artwork. It was wonderful to see their creativity and hard work on display for our community.

Wednesday began with a special breakfast honoring our military families as we celebrated Purple Up! Day. We are grateful for the service and sacrifices of our military connected families and appreciated the chance to recognize them. Our All County Chorus students shared their talents by learning and performing all of the service songs, which was a meaningful and enjoyable treat for everyone in attendance.

We also hosted a truly special assembly for students in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing program: Music: Not Impossible, coordinated by the orchestra teacher, Ms. Wilcox from Woodson High School and led by students from Woodson. Music: Not Impossible is an immersive sensory experience created to make live music more inclusive for the Deaf and hard of hearing community through wearable haptic technology. Students wore special vests that translated music into vibrations they could feel throughout their bodies, allowing them to experience rhythm, movement, and emotion in a new way. It was an incredible experience for our students! We were also honored to welcome Dr. Michelle Reid, who participated in the event alongside our students.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this week so meaningful for our students and families. We hope to see you tonight at Movie Night!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

FCPS News No School April 21/Meals for Students

April Statewide Election: No School for Students

There will be no school for students on Tuesday, April 21, for the Virginia statewide election. Student activities, athletic practices, and events may proceed as scheduled.

FCPS will offer lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on April 21 at participating schools . The meals must be eaten on site. For more information, visit the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services webpage

Adjusted Elementary Early Release Wednesdays

Students will now have a traditional full day of instruction and be released at the regular dismissal time on April 22 and April 29, which were previously early release Wednesdays for elementary schools.

This adjustment allows our staff to still have dedicated time for planning, collaboration, and professional learning without reducing instructional time on other school days.

SOL Support

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

This week was certainly one to remember! Thank you to everyone for your flexibility as we prioritized safety this past Monday. By Tuesday, things took a more mischievous turn as our primary classrooms were visited by a leprechaun who left quite a mess behind! Despite their best efforts, our students were unable to catch him, but they had a great time trying.

On Wednesday, we celebrated our delayed Pi Day. Our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders brought the fun by showcasing their incredible memorization skills! Students who memorized the most digits of Pi earned the chance to "pie" their teachers and our top memorizers from each grade got to pie Mrs. Malkowski, Ms. Milliron, and Mrs. McGeehan. Thank you to our dedicated students and staff for making learning so much fun!

Today marked the 121st day of school, and our 1st graders made the most of it with math activities and their highly anticipated fashion show!

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

What a wild weather week it has been, definitely a reminder that March can keep us guessing!

We had a fantastic time at our Math and Literacy Night. It was wonderful to see so many families in the building enjoying the games and activities together. Events like this truly highlight the strong sense of community we have at Canterbury Woods.

A special thank you goes out to our many student volunteers who helped make the evening such a success. We were grateful to have our 6th graders, several former Canterbury Woods students, and members of the Woodson Math Honor Society assisting throughout the night. Their enthusiasm and support meant so much to our younger students.

We would also like to thank our amazing PTA for providing pizza for families and our dedicated staff who worked hard to plan and run the event!

As a reminder we have another early release next week, on  Wednesday, March 18th. Students will be going home their usual way unless you notify the office of a change. Supervision until 4:05 PM has been confirmed for all students whose families indicated this need. Students attending afternoon SACC will be dismissed to SACC at  1:05 PM. If your child's after-school plans are changing for this day, please contact the school office at (703) 764-5600 as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The spirit of heritage and the promise of the future filled the air at Carter G. Woodson High School as FCPS held its second annual Black History Month Celebration with the theme, Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence. Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winner Jameson Jones and Runner-Up Jordan Atlee! We are so proud of your hard work and outstanding performance!

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

We had another wonderful week at school! Last Friday’s Bingo Night was a huge success and such a fun event for our community. Thank you to everyone who helped plan, organize, and support the evening.

This week brought another surprise snow day, but we were happy to return and finally enjoy outdoor recess again. Students and staff appreciated the chance to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

We also held our Spelling Bee this week, and our students did a fantastic job. We are proud of all the participants for their preparation, courage, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Jameson Jones our winner and Jordan Atlee our runner up!

Also this week our teachers participated in collaborative planning days where they had the opportunity to visit one another’s classrooms. This type of professional learning is a valuable way for teachers to expand their instructional toolbox and learn new strategies that support student success.

After the snow last weekend we received a few emails regarding a down tree in the neighborhood. Fairfax County Park Authority asked we share the message below with the community:

The bridge on the asphalt trail in Willow Woods Park connecting the end of Rosedale Lane to the Canterbury Woods Elementary School campus was severely damaged by a fallen tree. Fairfax County Park Operations has cleared the tree and installed barricades to prevent access to the damaged bridge. The bridge will remain closed until further notice. Alternate pedestrian access from Rosedale Lane to Canterbury Woods Elementary School is along Ponderosa Drive and Nero Street sidewalks. Fairfax County Park Authority appreciates your patience as we work to replace the damaged trail bridge.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

This week CWES has been celebrating National Random Acts of Kindness Week, which runs from February 15 to February 21. Students and staff have shown kindness in a wide variety of ways, including writing kind notes to hide in library books and doing kind acts from Cody’s Kindness BINGO board with their class. Celebrating and promoting kindness directly relates to our PAWS expectations (Persevere, Accept Responsibility, Work Together, and Show Respect).

Nurturing kindness at home helps your child and all our students succeed in school! Ideas to encourage kindness at home:

  • Make it a habit to ask your child, “what is something kind you did today?” and “what is something kind that you saw someone do today?”
  • Talk with your child about the difference between kind/respectful acts that are expected and random acts of kindness. How are each important?
  • For more information on Random Acts of Kindness Week or ideas on how to spread kindness, visit the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation .

FCPS News Black History Month Celebration

Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence

Families and community members are invited to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and uplift the voices shaping our future at FCPS’ Second Annual Black History Month Celebration. Rooted in Resilience: Echoes of Excellence will take place on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m., at Carter G. Woodson High School

New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Happy 100th Day of School!

5th Grade PBL Showcase Day!

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

It was a fantastic week at school! Today we celebrated the 100th Day of School with our kindergarten students, a milestone that always brings so much excitement and pride as our youngest learners reflect on how much they have grown in just 100 days. Classrooms were filled with creativity, laughter, and some very excited kindergarteners!

We also enjoyed celebrating Valentine’s Day, with students sharing kindness, friendship, and lots of smiles throughout the building. It was especially nice to have our first full week of school in quite a while after the recent weather disruptions. Thank you for your continued flexibility and support as we’ve navigated the delays and schedule changes.

As a reminder we have another early release next week, on Wednesday, February 18th.

We hope everyone enjoys the long weekend. As a reminder, there is no school on Monday or Tuesday. We look forward to welcoming students back on Wednesday, refreshed and ready to learn.

On Monday, all FCPS parents/caregivers and middle and high school students received an email to participate in a voluntary and confidential survey. (Please check your spam folder if you have not received it.)

Questions refer to proposed changes to FCPS’ SR&R document for next year. This document outlines the rules that students are expected to follow, and guidelines for consequences if those expectations are not met. Possible changes include:

  • Universal Discipline:Charts will list consequences and supports for students. They will help ensure that two students of the same grade will be treated fairly and receive the same level of support.
  • Standards for In-School Suspensions of Students with Disabilities:Creating standards for how in-school suspensions are handled for students who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan.
  • Accommodations for Multilingual Learner Student Statements:Providing translation accommodations when Multilingual Learner students provide statements about disciplinary incidents.

The survey will be open until Friday, February 20. Survey materials are available online .

Family Culture Night

Notes from the Administration

Dear Canterbury Woods Families,

It has certainly been a crazy week with the weather and multiple delays. Thank you all so much for your flexibility and patience as we’ve navigated it together. Due to lingering snow and ice, students have had indoor recess all week and it is likely that will continue into next week, as there hasn’t been much melting. When conditions allow us to safely go outside, we absolutely will, so please be sure to always send your child to school with a coat.

Before the snow arrived, we had a fantastic Family Culture Night, and it truly was one of the highlights of the year. It was a wonderful evening for our CWES community to come together to learn about the many cultures represented in our school, enjoy delicious food from around the world, and experience amazing performances. One of our favorite events of the year and the turnout was fantastic! Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a success.

We are also excited to officially begin the second half of the school year. This week, we kicked things off with grade level assemblies to refresh our students on their Student Rights and Responsibilities, as well as our PAWS expectations: Preserve, Accept Responsibility, Work Together, and Show Respect. We’re looking forward to a strong and positive second half of the year as we continue to learn and grow together.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron

National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career.

School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. We are incredibly lucky to have Ms. Mihalick and Ms. Wilson as part of our school community and are so thankful for all they do to support, guide, and advocate for our students each and every day.
