Disney day in our countdown to summer!

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Families,

This week was another full and meaningful week at Herndon Elementary as we continued our focus on strong instruction, thoughtful planning, and preparing for a successful finish to the school year.

On Monday, I began the morning alongside our ESOL leads, Mrs. Roque and Ms. Orman, at Willow Oaks as we engaged in planning conversations around Multilingual Learner programming and supports for next school year. These opportunities for collaboration help ensure we continue strengthening systems and supports for multilingual learners across our building. Back at Herndon, the day continued with counselor interviews and teacher observations as we continue building strong teams and supporting high-quality instruction in every classroom.

This week also marked another important stretch of SOL testing for our students. On May 12, students in Grades 3 and 6 participated in the Reading SOL, followed by the Grade 5 Science SOL on May 14. I continue to be incredibly proud of our students for their effort, perseverance, and focus throughout the testing process. At the same time, staff continue working diligently to provide targeted remediation and instructional support for students preparing for retake opportunities. Our teams remain focused on responding to student needs with care, urgency, and intentional support.

Tuesday, we welcomed Executive Principal Jamie Lane and Region leadership to Herndon Elementary. It is always valuable to showcase the strong work happening across our school while engaging in reflective conversations around instruction, systems, and student support. The day concluded with our Faculty Staff Advisory Committee meeting, where we continued collaborative conversations centered on staff voice, school improvement, and planning ahead.

Throughout the week, I also had the opportunity to host lunch bunches with our second grade and fourth grade students. These moments continue to be some of the highlights of my week as they provide opportunities to hear directly from students, celebrate their successes, and continue strengthening relationships across our school community.

Wednesday marked our final Early Release Wednesday of the school year. Staff spent the afternoon engaged in collaborative learning team work focused on student support, instructional planning, AAP screening conversations, SOL celebrations, and remediation planning as we continue responding to student needs in intentional ways.

On Thursday morning, I attended our final All County Principals Meeting at Willow Oaks. Across the county, principals engaged in important conversations connected to transportation updates, accreditation, school improvement planning for 2026–27, and advanced mathematics pathways for students. These conversations help ensure schools remain aligned and prepared as we continue strengthening opportunities and supports for all learners.

Additionally, Thursday was an important day for future planning at Herndon as we conducted School-Based Technology Specialist (SBTS) interviews in preparation for next year. We are incredibly grateful to Ms. Day for her years of service and leadership and look forward to welcoming a new SBTS to continue supporting innovation and instructional technology across our school community.

Thursday evening, our PTA met and officially voted in the new Executive Board leadership team. We are thankful for the continued partnership and support of our PTA and appreciate the many ways they continue to strengthen experiences for students, staff, and families.

On Friday, our construction team reached another exciting milestone in the renovation process near the SACC and music areas. It continues to be exciting watching progress unfold each week as we move closer toward expanded learning spaces that will support students for years to come.

These improvements represent more than just construction. They reflect our continued investment in creating modern, engaging, and student-centered learning environments that will support Herndon Elementary students for many years to come.

As we continue through the final stretch of the school year, our focus remains clear: strong instruction, targeted student support, and creating positive, engaging learning experiences for every Bee. Thank you for your continued partnership, encouragement, and support throughout this busy and exciting season at Herndon Elementary.

Celebrating Mrs. Holliday’s Next Chapter

Today, Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) formally announced Mrs. Daphne Holliday’s appointment as an Assistant Principal for the 2026–2027 school year at one of the division’s elementary schools.

While we will certainly miss Mrs. Holliday’s leadership, care, and partnership at Herndon ES, we are also incredibly proud of her and excited for this next chapter in her professional journey. This opportunity allows her to serve close to home while continuing her commitment to students and families in the same school division that helped shape her as both a student and educator.

Throughout her time at Herndon ES, Mrs. Holliday has led with compassion, high expectations, and a deep commitment to supporting every child. She has built strong relationships with students, staff, and families and has been a consistent advocate for multilingual learners and inclusive family partnerships. Her belief in the promise and potential of every student has always been evident in her work and leadership.

Transitions like this naturally bring mixed emotions. While we are saddened to see Mrs. Holliday leave our school community beginning July 1, 2026, we are deeply grateful for the many ways she has supported our students, staff, and families throughout her time at Herndon ES. Her impact on our school community has been lasting, and we know she will continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families in her new role.

Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Holliday and wishing her continued success as she begins this exciting new opportunity.

With appreciation,

Dr. Monika Vereb

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Community,

As we conclude another full and meaningful week at Herndon Elementary School, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our staff, students, families, PTA, and community partners for helping make Teacher Appreciation Week so special. Our construction-themed celebrations brought tremendous energy throughout the building, and the thoughtful support shown to our staff reflected the strength of our school community. From meals and treats to kind words and encouragement, our team truly felt appreciated and valued.

A special thank you goes to Jenny Kimsey (PTA), Laura Santini (Front Office Assistant), and Yovanka Perez (Front Office Assistant) for the tremendous amount of time, organization, and care they dedicated throughout the week. Additionally, the handwritten notes from Mayor Kevin LeBlanc were an especially thoughtful gesture that meant a great deal to many staff members.

This week, our attendance team continued closely monitoring chronic absenteeism data as we work to ensure every student is present, engaged, and supported. We are proud to currently be at 6.1%, with our lowest point this year reaching 5.8%. As we move through the final weeks of the school year, we remain focused on finishing strong and returning to the 5% range. Thank you to our families for continuing to partner with us in supporting strong student attendance. To help maximize instructional time and student participation, we will also conduct iPFIT Buy Back opportunities before school, during next week’s Early Release Wednesday, and on the upcoming Teacher Workday.

Our leadership team also participated in a Resource Inequity Review connected to our federal identification status. This process provided an opportunity to reflect on past practices, systems, and resource allocation decisions while identifying ways to continue strengthening support and access for all students. These conversations are an important part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, student success, and ensuring our decisions remain aligned to the needs of our school community.

Additional highlights from the week include:

• Meeting with our Lead Mentors to finalize planning for next year’s Mentor/Mentee Program under the leadership of Mrs. Gonzalez and Ms. Gebauer.
• Holding our Community Meeting with staff centered on MTSS implementation while enjoying breakfast from Omelette Guys.
• Collaborating with our AVID team to make decisions regarding next year’s AVID programming and student supports.
• Attending the FCPS GMU iLEAD evening event, where Mr. Jones joined other FCPS leaders in presenting on discipline disproportionality and equitable practices.
• Supporting our Grade 4 and Grade 5 students as they completed the Reading SOL assessment on Thursday.
• Interviewing strong candidates for our ELA Interventionist, Math Interventionist, and School Counselor positions as we prepare to continue the strong systems and student supports established by our beloved Ms. Bryant.

Thank you again for your continued partnership and support as we head into the final stretch of the school year. Together, we continue building a strong, supportive, and student-centered school community.

In Your Service,

Dr. Vereb Principal

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon Elementary Families,

It has been another exciting and full week of learning, connection, and forward planning at Herndon Elementary School. I am grateful for the many ways our students, staff, and community continue to come together in support of our Bees.

This week, we made important progress as we look ahead to the next school year while continuing to stay grounded in strong daily instruction:

  • We are excited to welcome Christopher Fitzgerald as our instructional coach (IC) for next year. He brings strong elementary experience and a deep understanding of data-based systems that will support high-quality instruction across classrooms.
  • I met with our Senior Manager for Mathematics to begin planning for an Algebra 1 opportunity for a cohort of rising sixth graders, expanding access to advanced coursework, all connected to our 2030 Strategic Plan.
  • We are grateful to the Herndon Women’s Club for exploring a generous donation to support our new library space, along with a future Little Free Library ("Take a Book. Share a Book.") to be installed near our front entrance.
  • We continued classroom walkthroughs and staff one-on-one meetings, staying focused on the systems and instructional priorities that will guide our work next year.

At the same time, this week was filled with meaningful experiences for our students and families:

  • We were proud to host our Purple Star Breakfast, honoring and celebrating our military-connected students and families.
  • I enjoyed spending time with students during our third and fourth grade lunch bunches, hearing directly about their experiences and ideas as their principal seeking to deliver the best possible school experience. I continue to be amazed by our incredible students.
  • Our Community Yard Sale brought families together for a fun and well-attended event, strengthening our school community.
  • On Friday, I joined colleagues across the region at Providence Elementary to plan for the expansion of AVID strategies and programming, which will continue to support student engagement and college and career readiness.

We are also looking forward to welcoming Superintendent Dr. Reid to Herndon Elementary on May 18 for a site visit. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the strong work happening across our school.

As we continue through this important time of the year, thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. Your engagement makes a meaningful difference for our students each day.

Looking ahead, we are also preparing to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week which begins next Monday and concludes on Friday. We look forward to recognizing and honoring our incredible teachers and the care, expertise, and commitment they bring to our Bees every single day.

With appreciation,

Dr. VerebHerndon Elementary School Principal

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Good evening, Herndon ES Families,

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. This week reflected the energy, care, and commitment our community brings to ensuring every student is supported, challenged, and thriving.

In alignment with the FCPS Strategic Plan—focusing on strong instruction, a positive and inclusive school environment, and meaningful student experiences—here are a few highlights from our week:

  • Our 4th grade students approached MAP testing with focus and perseverance. This reflects our shared commitment to high-quality instruction and ensuring students are prepared to demonstrate their learning.
  • Students across grade levels engaged in rich, hands-on learning beyond the classroom. Our 5th graders explored the Air and Space Museum, Kindergarten went to the Cub Run Nature Center, 6th grade traveled to the National Gallery of Art, and our PreK students visited Frying Pan Park, supporting real-world connections and deeper understanding.
  • On Wednesday, student leaders from each grade partnered with our leadership and construction teams to plant and seal a time capsule for our new building. This moment honored student voice and belonging—key priorities in creating a connected and inclusive school community.
  • Thursday’s Career Day brought learning to life as volunteers shared their experiences and inspired our students to think about their future pathways. We are grateful for the strong family and community partnerships that make opportunities like this possible. Special thanks to Ms. Bryant, Ms. Boyer, and Mr. Falkey for their leadership.

As we look ahead, we are preparing for our SOL assessments, which begin May 7 and continue through the end of the month. Students are engaging in steady, spiral review during intervention and extension time, with instruction grounded in current student data. This approach allows us to both reinforce key skills and extend learning where students are ready, ensuring each child is supported for success.

We are also continuing to see strong progress in student attendance. I am proud to share that our chronic absenteeism rate has improved to 6.2%, the lowest in our pyramid. This growth reflects the shared commitment between school and home. Consistent attendance has a direct impact on student learning, confidence, and connection to school, and we are grateful for your partnership in making this possible for our Bees.

Throughout the week, I continued classroom visits, staff collaboration, and partnership with our Region and central office teams, all grounded in our focus on the FCPS Instructional Framework and continuous improvement. I was also honored to represent Herndon at our Region 1 principals meeting and share a “mission moment” highlighting the impact of our collective work.

Finally, it was a joy to celebrate our students at the Science Olympiad at Oakton High School last weekend. Their effort, teamwork, and success reflect the many ways our students are growing and excelling. Special thanks to our parent volunteers and our wonderful sponsors Ms. Deshong and Ms. Helton.

As we move through the final stretch of the school year, we remain committed to supporting academic growth, fostering strong relationships, and ensuring every student feels a strong sense of belonging.

Thank you for being an important part of our school community.

In Your Service,

Dr. Vereb

Herndon Elementary School Principal

Children's Science Center Lab had lots of hands-on activities at Family Science Night.

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Hello Herndon Elementary Families,

It has been a full and joyful week of learning, connection, and celebration across our school community. Thank you for the many ways you continue to partner with us to support our Bees.

Here are a few highlights and important updates:

  • Science Night SuccessTuesday evening brought energy and excitement to Herndon ES as families engaged in hands-on learning during Science Night. A special thank you to Elizabeth Baxter, Kathleen Trench, Brian Falkey, Pam Galyean, Raquel Snyder, Bertha Sanders, and Jenn Flora for creating such a meaningful experience for our students and families.
  • Listening and Learning with Our CommunityOn Wednesday, we spent time with our 5th and 6th grade students, continuing to support their growth as leaders. I also joined two parents at Gatehouse for a parent panel with our Senior Leadership Team. It was a powerful opportunity to listen to the voices of our families—especially our multilingual learner and military families—as they shared what is working well, where we can grow, and their hopes and dreams for their children.
  • Honoring Our Military FamiliesWe were proud to recognize Purple Up Day by wearing purple in support of our military-connected students and families. We hope to see many of you this weekend at the Military Family Field Day on Saturday, April 18, from 12:00–2:00 p.m. at Annandale High School.
  • Strong Systems and Student ExperiencesOn Thursday, we welcomed the Virginia Department of Education to observe our food services program—an excellent reflection of the strong systems in place to support students. We also completed our monthly fire drill, and our students demonstrated responsibility and readiness. Friday brought smiles across the building with Spring Pictures and an exciting field trip for our 5th graders to the Air and Space Museum.
  • SOL Review: Supporting Students at HomeWe are now 10 days into our SOL review cycle, and these final weeks leading up to state assessments are an important time for reinforcing skills and building student confidence. At school, students are receiving targeted small group instruction based on their needs, using multiple data points to guide support .

Families can support at home by using the following resource: SOL Pass ( www.solpass.org )

This site provides review activities, practice questions, and content support aligned to Virginia standards. Even short, consistent practice at home can make a meaningful difference.

  • Looking Ahead

Science Olympiad-This weekend, we are cheering on our Science Olympiad team as they compete at Oakton High School. We are proud of their hard work and grateful to Ms. Deshong and Ms. Helton for their leadership.

2026 Special Education Family Conference-You are invited to attend the 2026 Special Education Family Conference  on April 18, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Marshall High School , 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22043. This conference is a chance to spend meaningful time with our families, learn more about the resources that support our students, and continue building the strong partnerships that help our students thrive. I truly hope you’ll join us and be part of a day centered on supporting the students and families we care so much about. Please register for the conference using this registration form . Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and families.

And finally, a quick note about this week’s weather—if it felt like we skipped right past spring and landed in summer, you were not alone. We appreciate your help in sending students prepared for these warmer days ahead.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are ensuring every student feels prepared, confident, and ready to succeed.

Principal Vereb

FCPS AAP  Spring Newsletter

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Subject Specific and Part-Time Services
Students can be screened for subject specific and part time AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.
•Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) or Assistant Principal by April 15, annually.
•The AAP School-Based Services Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced-academic-program-aap-forms or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/ .
•Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

Screening Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time ServicesMultiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Subject Specific and Part-Time ServicesIf a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services Overview

Subject Specific and Part-Time Services in Elementary School
FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:•Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
•A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6
All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.
•All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
•Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.
Because Access to Rigor services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Subject Specific Advanced Differentiation, Grades K-6
Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:
•Providing different assignments and resources in those subjects,
•Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and readiness, and
•Providing additional challenges using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework.
Student needs for subject specific differentiation are re-evaluated each year at the local school.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

•Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
•Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.
Part-Time services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening for Full-Time Services

Screening Timeline for Full-Time Services
Screening for Full-Time AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Full-Time services occurs during two specific screening cycles:
•Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January.
•Fall referrals are due October 15, annually.
Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student.
The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, annually.

For more information, please visit the AAP website at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8
Some advanced learners need a Full-Time advanced academic program with differentiated instruction in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science).
Students eligible for Full-Time AAP services are cluster grouped on a Full-Time basis and receive:
•Full-Time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, and
•Curriculum that is differentiated through acceleration, depth, and complexity of content.
Full-Time services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school community. This week reflected the strong connections, thoughtful planning, and shared commitment that help our students grow each day.

  • We began the week with a Teacher Workday and iPFIT Buy-Back Day, providing staff with dedicated time to reflect, plan, and strengthen instruction. I am proud to share that since December, our chronic absenteeism (CA) rate has decreased from 12.6% to as low as 6.8% this week. This progress reflects the strength of our collective effort—through consistent communication, strong partnerships with families, and intentional systems of support, we are making a meaningful difference for our students.
  • We met with Northwest Federal Credit Union to deepen our partnership and expand opportunities that benefit our students and families.
  • Our third graders enjoyed a hands-on learning experience at Frying Pan Park, bringing classroom learning to life.
  • During our Community Meeting, students and staff focused on AVID strategies that support engagement, organization, and student ownership of learning.
  • We met with Executive Board

On Friday, our team came together for a School Planning Day with a clear focus on preparing for upcoming SOL assessments. Our staff has developed a targeted review plan designed to ensure every student feels confident and prepared.

As we move forward:

  • Students will participate in small-group review aligned to their individual needs
  • Instruction will continue to focus on strong Tier I teaching alongside targeted support
  • Progress will be monitored to ensure students are mastering key concepts

Our goal is simple and important: every student walks into their assessment feeling ready, supported, and capable. Additionally, we welcomed our rising Kindergarten families for Kindergarten Orientation and welcomed a third of the class for a fun-filled morning of learning and onboarding.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our Bees. Together, we are ensuring every child is prepared to finish the year strong.

💰 Treasurer:Manages the budget, tracks expenses, and oversees financial reporting

📝 Secretary:Keeps meeting notes and helps with communications like newsletters

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Dear Herndon ES Families

This week, our work continued to center on relationships, student growth, and preparing for a strong future together. I am grateful for the time to connect with many of you and to see our students thriving in so many ways.

Here are a few highlights from the week:

  • I continued home visits as part of my listening tour. These conversations are helping us better understand our families and strengthen the partnership between home and school.
  • Our team moved forward with interviews as we grow for next year. We are excited to welcome new team members who will support our students and contribute to our positive school culture.
  • We were honored to welcome Dr. Nardos King, our Chief of Equity. She spent time learning about our progress toward reading by third grade and reviewing our third grade data aligned to our strategic plan.
  • Our students completed the IRW assessment this week. We are proud of their effort and focus during this important measure of their learning.
  • I met with staff who support our patrol program as we begin planning for next year. We are focused on strengthening opportunities for student leadership and meaningful service.
  • I visited Braddock Elementary to learn alongside another Spanish Immersion school and will continue this learning with a visit to Bailey’s Upper in April.
  • Our renovation planning continues with bi-weekly meetings. We are seeing strong progress as we prepare for the next phase of construction over Spring Break.
  • I also enjoyed hosting lunch bunches with our students. This week, I met with a thoughtful group of third grade girls and a close-knit and funny group of fifth grade boys. These moments help me stay connected to student voice and experience.

💃🏽Moment of Celebration: Heritage Night

We are deeply grateful for the incredible turnout at this year’s Heritage Night. It was a beautiful evening filled with connection, pride, and shared learning across our school community.

Students, families, and staff came together to celebrate the many cultures and traditions that make our community strong. Through conversations, performances, and shared experiences, we were reminded that we learn best when we learn together.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make the evening so meaningful. Your presence and partnership continue to strengthen our school community in lasting ways.

👏🏼Moment of Celebration: Attendance Progress

Our sustained, schoolwide focus on attendance is making a meaningful difference for students. We are proud to share that our chronic absenteeism rate has reached an all-time low of 8.0% and ending the week at 8.2%.

This progress reflects the collective impact of:

  • Clear, consistent attendance systems and monitoring
  • Early outreach and support for students showing early signs of concern
  • Strong collaboration between staff, families, and support teams

This work ensures more students are present, engaged, and positioned for success each day. Our goal is to continue this momentum and move toward the lowest possible chronic absenteeism rate. With continued partnership, we know this is within reach.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to your child’s success and to our school community.

We wish all of our families a restful and joyful Spring Break. We look forward to welcoming our students back refreshed and ready for a strong finish to the school year as we gear up for our SOLs.

PTA News

Highlights from Our Digital Learning PTA Meeting

Thank you to Alaina Bear, Rachel Gonzalez, and Adriana Rivera Pancheco for joining our recent PTA meeting and sharing a helpful overview of the digital learning tools used at Herndon ES.

Teachers walked families through several of the math and literacy platforms students use in the classroom, how to access them from home through Clever on the HES website, and ways parents can support students when they get stuck.

A few key takeaways:

  • Lightspeed helps the school monitor which websites students visit on their laptops.
  • Lexia is a core literacy platform used to build reading skills. Students may bring laptops home so they can practice, though use at home is optional and families can set their own expectations.
  • JiJi / ST Math and other math tools support conceptual understanding through interactive learning.
  • Teachers shared helpful questions parents can ask when students feel stuck, helping guide them toward problem-solving instead of giving the answer.
  • For ESOL students, the Summit platform supports English language development. Students can listen to stories in both Spanish and English, and research shows strong gains for English language learners.

Teachers also encouraged families to balance digital learning with traditional reading, such as spending time with physical books at home.

Principal Dr. Vereb having lunch bunch with 6th graders

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Vereb's Weekly Reflections from the Hive

Dear HES Families,

It was another full and energizing week in the Hive. I continue to be grateful for the learning, collaboration, and community that make Herndon Elementary such a special place for our students.

🦒Learning in Action

This week I had the pleasure of joining Kindergartenduring their Zoo learning experience. Students researched an animal of their choice and then shared their learning during a gallery walk. It was wonderful to see our youngest Bees demonstrating strong Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills, confidently presenting their work and engaging with peers and adults about their learning.

🛩️On Tuesday, many of our students had the opportunity to travel to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where they explored aviation and space history. Experiences like this help bring classroom learning to life.

👂Listening to Students

This week also marked the launch of student listening tours. I hosted my first Lunch Bunch with sixth graders, and it was a fantastic conversation. In the coming weeks I will continue meeting with students in small groups to hear about their experiences as Bees. These conversations help us understand our strengths as a school community and identify opportunities for growth.

📚Supporting Student Success

Our staff continued strong work this week to support student learning and well-being:

  • Staff and I continued 1:1 check-ins using our four guiding questions to stay focused on student outcomes.
  • We conducted targeted MTSS behavior lessons with fifth grade to help reset expectations and support a strong finish to the school year.
  • Students participated in both our monthly fire drill and our required tornado drill as part of safety preparedness and Tornado Awareness Month.

We also finalized several important instructional plans:

  • Our SOL preparation plan for April and May
  • Spring Sprouts and Blooming Readers, our spring break program supporting literacy and core instruction
  • iPFIT Buy Back opportunities for attendance support

🌎Looking Ahead: Spanish Immersion Program

On Thursday we conducted Spanish Immersion classroom walkthroughs. As we look ahead, I will be partnering with our FCPS World Languages Office to strengthen several areas of the program, including:

  • Literacy development in both English and Spanish
  • Assessment for student onboarding
  • Scheduling structures
  • Professional learning for teachers

Our goal is to ensure that every student in the program develops strong bilingual literacy and thrives academically.

🪑Modernization Planning

This week we also met with School Specialty to finalize the furniture order for our modernization project. It is exciting to see these plans continue to move forward as we prepare learning spaces that support collaboration, creativity, and student engagement for years to come.

🏡Family Leadership and PTA Support

Thursday evening I joined our Executive Board meeting, where we discussed the importance of strong family leadership in supporting our students and school community.

In the coming weeks, families will see a call to action from the PTA inviting parents to join and consider leadership or committee roles for next year. A strong PTA helps ensure that our students benefit from enriching events and programs.

At this time, we are also seeking parent leaders to support two upcoming events due to changes in volunteer availability:

  • Spring Book Fair (we did host one in the fall and most schools only conduct one)
  • Movie Night

If you are interested in helping with either event, please watch for information from the PTA about how to get involved.

As we approach the end of the school year, we will also be working to elect a full Executive Board and committee volunteers. The PTA will be sharing information about the responsibilities and commitments associated with each role.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students and staff. The strength of the Hive comes from the collaboration between our families, educators, and community.

I look forward to another great week ahead.

Warmly,

Dr. Monika Vereb

This week was National School Breakfast Week and our admin made pancakes for our staff!

Message from Principal Vereb  Please excuse the duplicate message. We realized the March 6 newsletter did not send on Friday as scheduled, and the updated principal message was not reflected before the message was saved and released.

Principal’s Message

Dear Herndon Elementary Families,

It has been a busy and meaningful week of learning and collaboration at Herndon Elementary.

On Monday, our staff engaged in a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) planning day led by our Title I Resource Teacher, Mrs. Abby Hamilton. During this time, teams reviewed student data and planned supports to ensure every student receives the instruction and assistance they need to succeed. Throughout the week, our leadership team also continued one-on-one coaching conversations with teachers and celebrated the hard work of our students during our Science Olympiad recognition event.

Midweek, our faculty gathered for a community meeting focused on strengthening our MTSS structures so we can continue providing timely and coordinated support for students. At the same time, our Carnegie Clear Math partners worked alongside teachers to plan upcoming instruction, visit classrooms, and reflect on teaching practices that support strong mathematics learning. These collaborative efforts help ensure instruction remains aligned and responsive to student needs.

On Thursday evening, our Family Engagement Committee (FEC) shared updates with families and provided learning focused on appropriate technology use. Additionally, the PTA hosted their general meeting in the library, where we discussed upcoming events, renovation updates, and the need for parent volunteers for the PTA Executive Board for 2026–2027. We appreciate the partnership of our PTA and families in supporting the success of our students and school community.

We also welcomed colleagues from the FCPS Office of School Support (OSS) on Friday. Together we conducted classroom learning walks in our third and sixth grade classrooms to observe instruction, celebrate strengths, and identify next steps as we continue preparing students for the SOL assessments that begin in May.

Across classrooms this week, we saw students actively discussing their thinking, working with partners to solve problems, and using clear learning targets to guide their work. Teachers are continuing to use data and regular feedback cycles to refine instruction and ensure students are making strong progress.

We are also encouraged to share that our school’s chronic absenteeism rate has continued to decline and is now 9.9%, reflecting the strong partnership between families and staff in supporting student attendance.

As we move into the spring months, our focus remains on strong instruction, targeted support for students, and maintaining the momentum our students have built throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our Herndon Elementary Bees.

This week was National School Breakfast Week and our admin made pancakes for our staff!

Message from Principal Vereb

🐝 Principal Reflections from the Hive

Even with a snow day to start the week, the learning and leadership at Herndon Elementary did not slow down.

❄️ Monday: Snow Day

A pause in the week gave many of us time to rest and reset. I am grateful for a community that stays flexible and supportive when schedules shift.

🤝 Tuesday: Transformative Family Engagement

Our team engaged in professional learning focused on family engagement strategies that move beyond events and toward partnership. We examined how we build trust, increase access, and create two-way communication that supports student growth. The goal is not simply engagement, but meaningful collaboration that improves outcomes for students.

📊 WIDA Testing in Action

This week we continued WIDA ACCESS testing. Our multilingual learners are demonstrating growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I am proud of the care our staff takes to ensure students feel confident and supported during assessments.

🏠 Home Visits

I had several lovely home visits this week. These conversations strengthen relationships and reinforce our shared commitments. When we meet families and listen to their hopes and dreams for our school community, we build trust and vision that lasts.

🏗 Construction Progress Meeting

We met with our construction partners to review modernization progress. Each meeting brings us one step closer to an updated learning environment that reflects the excellence happening inside our classrooms every day.

🤝 Community Partnerships

We were grateful to meet with partners from Bechtel and Trinity Church this week. Strong school-community partnerships expand opportunities for students and strengthen our One Hive network of support.

🎶 Celebrating Excellence

It was an honor to attend the Second Annual Black History Month Celebration at Carter G. Woodson High School. The student performances were powerful reminders of the brilliance, talent, and leadership within our division.

🎉 65 Years of Herndon Excellence

Finally, members of our team attended the Fairfax County School Board meeting where Herndon Elementary was recognized for 65 years of service to this community. That recognition belongs to generations of educators, families, and students who built the legacy we now carry forward.

Looking Ahead

This week reflected what makes Herndon Elementary special:

  • Strong instruction
  • Meaningful family partnership
  • Community collaboration
  • Pride in our history
  • Focus on our future

Thank you for being part of this work. It is an honor to lead alongside you.

With gratitude,
Dr. Monika Vereb

Message from Principal Vereb

Readers Are Leaders: How Herndon Students Are Building Confidence — One Book at a Time

Each week, members of the boys basketball team from Herndon High Schooltrade in their practice shoes for storybooks as they travel down the road to Herndon Elementary Schoolto read alongside their younger buddies. The visits are part of the Readers Are Leaders initiative — a program designed to strengthen literacy while building meaningful relationships between students of different ages.

Founded by longtime educator and coach Wendell Byrd, Readers Are Leaders brings together two powerful ideas: helping young students experience the joy of reading and giving high school athletes opportunities to serve their community in meaningful ways. Byrd, who spent more than 30 years teaching elementary students while coaching high school athletes, envisioned a program where mentorship could positively shape both groups of students.

HES PTA Leadership Opportunities for Next Year

Principal Reflections from the Hive

This week, our Herndon Elementary community experienced a significant loss. Our thoughts remain with the family and all who are grieving.

We recognize that students and adults may process loss in different ways. We have worked closely with Region 1 and central office to ensure appropriate counseling and support services are available. Our school counselors remain available to assist any student who may need additional support. If you believe your child would benefit from speaking with someone, please contact our main office so we can help connect you.

School routines continue to provide important stability for our students, and our teachers are supporting children with care and flexibility. I am deeply grateful for the compassion and professionalism our staff and families have shown this week.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the care you extend to our school community.

We are excited to announce that Herndon ES is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Message from Principal Vereb

Message from Principal Vereb

Principal Reflections from the Hive

This week was a reminder that even when schedules shift, the strength, care, and professionalism of the Herndon Elementary community remain constant.

With a school closure on Monday and two-hour delays from Tuesday through Friday, flexibility was essential. I am grateful to our students, staff, and families for navigating a unique week with patience and partnership while keeping learning and relationships at the center.

We were proud to celebrate our school counselors during National School Counseling Week. Ms. Bryant, Ms. Boyer, and Mr. Falkeyplay a critical role in supporting our students’ academic success, social-emotional growth, and overall well-being. Their care, advocacy, and leadership make a daily difference for our students and families, and we are grateful for all that they do.

Throughout the week, we also celebrated classroom and grade-level attendance bright spots in the cafeteria. These moments matter. Strong attendance supports learning, connection, and routine, and it was energizing to highlight the collective efforts of students, staff, and families who are working together to make every day count.

Our focus on continuous improvement remained strong. I continued meeting with staff through individual one-on-one conversations, and we welcomed central office leaders to Herndon ES to engage in thoughtful dialogue around our data. Together, we examined student growth in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and attendance. We are proud of the progress our students are making and remain committed to using data responsibly to guide instruction and support.

On Thursday evening, I appreciated the opportunity to meet with our PTA Executive Board. Our partnership with families is essential, and these conversations help ensure we remain aligned in supporting students and strengthening our school community.

We closed the week with a visit from our Regional Assistant Superintendent, followed by a joyful PTA fundraiser at Chuck E. Cheese. It was wonderful to see families, staff, and students together in celebration and community.

Even in a week shaped by weather-related adjustments, the heart of our work remained steady. Thank you for your flexibility, collaboration, and continued commitment to our students and one another.

Together, we continue to lead in the light and learn best in community.

With gratitude,
Dr. Monika Vereb
Principal, Herndon Elementary School 🐝

Message from Principal Vereb

Principal Reflections from the Hive

This week reminded us of the strength, care, and professionalism that define the Herndon Elementary community—even when circumstances shift our plans.

Following the snow and ice storm over the weekend, I want to begin by sharing my deep gratitude for our Herndon ES custodial team. Their dedication and hard work, often behind the scenes, ensured that our campus was prepared for a safe return for students, staff, and families. Their commitment to safety and care for our community does not go unnoticed, and we are thankful for all they do. As an additional gesture of appreciation, we will be stocking the custodial team lounge once school reopens. Families or staff who wish to contribute items of appreciation may drop them off at the main office. We will collect and share these items with our custodial team as a way to show our gratitude and care.

Despite weather-related adjustments, important work continued across our school. The Admin Team and Mrs. Flora met with Shockey Constructionand the Cooper Carry Architecture and Design teamduring our biweekly modernization meeting to review progress and next steps. It is exciting to see our vision for a modernized Herndon ES continue to take shape—work that will ultimately support student learning, collaboration, and community for years to come.

This week, our administrative team also co-facilitated professional learning focused on Inclusive Education, aligned with FCPS priorities and our 2030 Strategic Plan. Together, we began—or continued—our learning around increasing inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities, deepening our understanding of the what, why, and how of inclusive practices alongside the Inclusive Schooling consultants. Most importantly, we made connections to our own classrooms and reflected on next steps to ensure all students are supported, valued, and successful.

Our instructional focus remained strong as well. I participated in professional learning and planning connected to literacy and Walk to Read through third grade, and I could not be more proud of the student growth reflected in our data. These results are a testament to our students’ hard work, our staff’s expertise, and our shared commitment to using data intentionally to drive instruction.

On Friday, staff engaged in a Teacher Work Day, creating time for planning, reflection, and preparation. At the same time, our newly formed administrative team participated in a half-day retreat. Following the retreat, we spent time selecting furniture for our modernized building, strengthening our team collaboration, and working with our Elementary Math Resource Teachers (EMRTs) to plan for upcoming MAP data dialoguethat will take place during our February all-staff community meeting.

Even in a week shaped by winter weather, our collective focus on student growth, inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement remained strong. Thank you for your flexibility, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our students and one another.

Together, we continue to lead in the light and learn best in community .

With gratitude,
Dr. Monika Vereb
Principal, Herndon Elementary School 🐝

Student Fasting Meal Kits

From February 18 to March 19, 2026, a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) waiver allows students fasting during the school day to request take-home meal kits. These kits include a complete school breakfast and lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.

Important Meal Kit Information:

  • Kits are charged based on a student’s meal status (Free, Reduced, or Paid).
  • Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day.
  • Students who eat a meal at school during the day are not eligible for a take-home kit on the same day.
  • Kits are distributed at the end of the school day. Students must pick up their own kits; adults are not permitted to collect them.

Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website  by the deadlines:

K&K Student Accident Insurance

Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school.Parents may want to consider if purchasing voluntary student insurance is appropriate for their family.

K & K Insurance Group offers student accident insurance coverage that parents may purchase. For families without other medical insurance, this plan may be a helpful resource. Additionally, for families who already have coverage, this plan may help offset costs such as deductibles and co-pays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.

 It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school

After determining which school your child will attend, you should gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible. Get the details on the FCPS Registration webpage

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, visit the registration webpage .
