Choosing Courses for the 2026-27 School Year

At Luther Jackson Middle School, the course selection process is a collaborative effort involving students, parents/guardians, and staff to ensure every student’s success and access to opportunities. Our goal is to empower students to make informed decisions about their education as they continue on their academic journey.

During this process, students will receive important information about our programs, services, and resources. School counselors play a key role in supporting students by guiding them through course options, providing details about prerequisites, sequencing, and placement, and helping them develop an academic plan that aligns with their goals.

Students will bring home course selection materials for your review. It is essential to discuss these options together, as course offerings depend on enrollment, and staffing decisions are influenced by the selections students make. By working with their school counselors, students will gain the tools and knowledge to navigate their academic path, set a strategy for success, and take steps toward achieving their future aspirations.

FCPS Graduation Requirements

Honors Courses and Mathematics Placement for the 2026–2027 School Year

FCPS honors courses, offered in both middle and high school, are designed as extensions of the FCPS Program of Studies. These courses challenge students through enriched learning experiences that build on their academic strengths and interests. Using the Parallel Curriculum Model, honors courses provide increased depth and complexity by incorporating critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, and abstract approaches to content. These rigorous experiences help prepare students for future academic success.

Mathematics Honors Courses and Placement at Luther Jackson MS

For the 2026–27 school year, LJMS will be aligning with countywide mathematics pathways to ensure all students have access to Algebra 1 by 8th grade. Below are important updates and placement details for families:

7th Grade Mathematics Placement

  • Math 7 and Math 7 Honors will not be offered at LJMS for the 2026–27 school year.
  • All rising 7th graders will be placed into:
    • Pre-Algebra, or
    • Pre-Algebra Honors (for students who have not already qualified for Algebra 1 Honors or higher).
  • Placement into Algebra 1 Honors for 7th grade now requires:
    • Successful completion of Advanced Mathematics 6, and
    • A score of 500 or higher (Pass Advanced) on the Advanced Math 6 SOL.
    • Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) scores are no longer required.

8th Grade Mathematics Placement

  • All 8th graders will be enrolled in:
