Book Checkout & Return

We never deny a student a book, regardless of interest, reading ability, or maturity level. Parents can enforce checkout limits and requirements with their own student, but the library does not interfere with a student's choices when checking out.

How many books can I check out?

  • Students are allowed to check out as many books as they can responsibly  care for. For some students, that may be one book; for others, it may be ten.
  • We encourage students to learn for themselves what they can handle.

How long can I keep the books that I checked out?

  • Books and other materials are stamped with the due date, which is three weeksfrom the date of check out.
  • Students are welcome to renewitems unless another student has that book on hold.
  • If a book is already checked out by someone else, students can place a hold. When the book is returned, the library will deliver the book to the next student in line.

What happens if a book is late or lost?

  • We do not charge fines for overdue materials.
  • Students are responsible for returning their items by the due date.
  • Students should regularly check their Destiny and Gmail accounts to monitor their own checkouts.
  • Sometimes bad things happen to good books! If a book has been lost or damaged, we ask that the student come speak to us directly so that we can discuss ways to prevent the loss or damage in future.
  • We do not bill for lost or damaged books. HOWEVER we are happy to accept a new copy of the book or funds to replace the book.

What kind of resources are available online?

  • Students are welcome to use databases purchased centrally by Fairfax County.
  • Students have access to eBooks, audiobooks, and comicsusing MackinVia. Find the link at the top of the screen in  Destiny Discover.

How do I find books that I might like to read?

  • Browse our bookshelves.
  • Look through the Visual Book Lists on our Google Site .
  • Check out the FCPS “What to Read Next” site.
  • Ask your librarians! We are happy to help!
