Curious about Kindergarten?
What is Kindergarten?
The FCPS kindergarten program is designed to encourage and support children’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Children are involved in daily learning experiences with speaking, reading, writing, mathematics, social sciences, science, technology, health, music, movement, and art. Kindergarten is offered in all schools and is a full-day program.
The kindergarten program:
- Focuses on daily learning experiences that help children to communicate orally, interact with others, participate in problem-solving activities, and think critically.
- Provides children with daily opportunities to write, explore books, listen to stories, and have conversations in a language-rich environment. This helps build strong communication skills, early reading foundations (such as sounds and letters), vocabulary, understanding, and a lifelong love of reading and writing.
- Encourages children to demonstrate mathematical understanding by using real objects as they discuss, investigate, question, and verify.
- Enables children to acquire knowledge about themselves as individuals, and as members of a family, a community, and the world.
- Offers opportunities for children to observe, explore, experiment, and investigate the world around them.
- Utilizes a variety of learning centers and stations to reinforce skills.
- Encourages children’s creativity and higher-level thinking.
- Provides access to digital tools to all students that are used to support their learning.

Is Kindergarten Mandatory?
Virginia law states parents/guardians must ensure a child attends school if the child will be five years old on or before September 30.
However, if a parent/guardian feels their child is not mentally, physically, or emotionally prepared to attend school, the child may be exempted for the year. Families must notify the local school if they do not want the child to attend kindergarten until the following school year.
When a child turns six, school attendance is mandatory. Grade placement (kindergarten or first grade) will be determined at the time of enrollment with consideration for factors such as age, academic records, and school readiness.
Eligibility
Two factors determine a student's eligibility to enroll in kindergarten in FCPS:
- Residency:The child must be living with a parent/guardian and reside in Fairfax County (use the boundary locator to determine your zoned school).
- Age:A child may enter kindergarten if they turn five on or before September 30 of the year they enter school.
- The age requirement applies to students who transfer from other school districts after the start of the school year.
- This age requirement is set by Virginia law.
