Message from Mrs. Castillo

It was an exciting week at Lemon Road! Our 1st & 3rd grade classrooms were chirping as students welcomed newly hatched chicks into their classrooms. Thank you to Mrs. Busch and our teachers for providing such a memorable experience for our students.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Busch and our Trout Team celebrated the release of the trout that they have been caring for at George Washington National Forest.  Then our 5th & 6th graders had a fantastic time at Wednesday’s SCA Spring Social! Thank you to Ms. Benson, Ms. Deal & our SCA for planning such a fun event.  The energy was high thanks to DJs VT & Hickman who kept the dance floor full start to finish.

We have successfully completed two of three days of SOL testing.  The experience has been smooth and the students have been working hard.  Thank you for ensuring that your children come to school on testing days well rested, having eaten breakfast, and with a positive attitude!   All grades 3 - 6 students will take their math SOL on Thursday.

Mark your calendar for the PTA Meeting this Wednesday night.  Representatives from Longfellow and Kilmer Middle Schools will be in attendance and we encourage our 5th & 6th graders to attend with their parents.  This meeting will take place in the cafeteria and childcare is available in the library.

Have a great week!

New Cellphone & Smartwatch Policy

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) for 2026 - 2027. The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cellphone policy with Senate Bill 108 . This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

Message from Mrs. Castillo

It is hard to believe it is May and we are in the final stretch of the 2025 - 2026 school year.  Get out your calendars are read closely to stay on top of exciting events and deadlines for your children.

Last week, our staff had a silly secret spirit day where we were encouraged to wear socks & sandals around school - many lions noticed!  Our STEAM program brought an assembly for all grade levels where they saw and learned about Birds of Prey with visits from actual birds. Sixth graders have kept up their field trip streak - half went to visit an Art Museum while the other half visit this week.  Our first graders participated in a See, Think, Wonder activity where they made observations about primary and secondary sources.  In CCT with Mrs. Argue, classes worked on a building challenge using only index cards and tape.  Our band, strings, and chorus programs are busy rehearsing for the Evening of the Arts on Wednesday and our art teachers & parent volunteers have been hanging student artwork around the school.  Finally, the students are enjoying this spring weather at recess and during PE.

Lemon Road is often commended for the excellence in academics and critical thinking, but this week, our Food Services Team won an award recognizing our school kitchen team as a top performing kitchenbased on their skills, service, participation level and overall FNS excellence!  It was quite an honor to recognize Ms. Son and her amazing team.

Read on and have a great week ~ Mrs. Castillo

Our school biking unit ended last week.  Any personally owned bikes or helmets can go home (but bring them Wednesday)!

All Lemon Road families are invited to stop by Lemon Road Wednesday, May 6 from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.  Our musicians (band, orchestra & chorus) will be performing on the stage and one piece of artwork from every student will be on display throughout the first floor.  New this year will be some light refreshments provided in conjunction with the Fairfax 250Commission!  We hope everyone can stop by to see and hear the amazing work of our Lemon Road lions.

Lions had a great week last week!  I enjoyed seeing some of 4th graders in math and in Benchmark.  Ms. Allen's class sent in a photo of them celebrating Earth Day and Mrs. LaBarbera's Kindergarten class enjoyed working on their phonics using shaving cream - a definite favorite way to practice.  Many of our 6th graders visited Kilmer Middle School on Friday to check out what next year will look and feel like.  Finally, we celebrated April birthdays with a school-wide Camping Day on Friday!  Thank you to our room parents for organizing Freaky Friday treats for all classes.

Last call for any class placement input from parents using our intent to return form linked here.  The opportunity to provide input closes on Friday so our teacher teams can begin organizing for next year.

All classes will have an end of year class/grade party.  The day when all K - 5 parties will be held is Tuesday, June 16.  Class party times will be determined by school administration and shared with teams & room parents soon.  Room parents can begin planning for a spring/summer themed snack, crafts, games, and party.

Our 6th grade tradition is to celebrate as a grade level for a full day.  Sixth Grade Day will be on Friday, June 5.  Any 6th grade parent interested in being a part of the core planning committee should email their teacher or room parents this week.  We appreciate all our parents & volunteers!

Have a great week!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

This week we enjoyed 5 full days with students, field trips, military recognitions, All County Chorus Festival, the Marshall Pyramid Art Show, PTA Spring Fair, and Solo and Ensemble Festival for band.  Thank you for enthusiastic parent participation, volunteering, and chaperoning!

Our third graders visited the American History Museum while our fifth graders took charter buses to Luray Caverns.  Students in grades 3 - 6 have gotten on the bikes and are showing off their skills already!  Our office staff held a breakfast to thank and recognize many of our amazing volunteers that make Lemon Road a special place - even if you could not attend, we appreciate you!

On Saturday, two special events were held for our student muscians.  Sixth graders that participated in All County Chorus were Adelynn Yip, Brooklyn Castillo, Lesley Chang, Skye Ronaldson, Arjun Deevi, Claire Sibre, Mila Valera, and Lexi Burke. Students that participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festival were Asher Cahn, Ruby Senior, Kavni Patel, Violet Rafferty, Lily Hsu, Aarti Pathak, and Alex Doble.

Spring Testing Season Is Here

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season. It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Below is the schedule for the spring SOL tests at Lemon Road:

  • Tuesday, May 12:Grade 5 Reading SOL
  • Friday, May 15:Grades 3, 4 & 6 Reading SOL; Grade 5 Science SOL
  • Thursday, May 21:Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Math & Honors Algebra 1 SOL

Grades 3 - 6 Bike Unit in PE

Hello Lemon Road Families,

Students in grades 3 - 6 will be starting their bike riding unit in PE on Monday April 13th and end on May 1st. Our teachers, Mr. Hickman & Mr. Van Trees take precautions to make sure your children are safe during their ride, including wearing hairnets, helmets, and teach proper bike safety.  Please ensure your children do not wear long dresses or baggy clothing on PE days for the next month as they can get caught in bike chains.  Having a properly fitted helmet is important so students with long hair are asked to wear it so that a helmet can fit over it properly (for example, a low ponytail). Students may bring their own helmets and/or bicycles.  If your child would like to use their own bike during their PE, they may ride it to school and lock it on the bike rack next to DOOR 6 or in the front of the school near the flagpole. All bikes on bike racks will also be under camera surveillance. If there is no room on either bike rack, you can lock them up to the fence closest to the bike rack in the back of the school.

This is a really fun unit and we appreciate you helping your child have the most success possible!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

We hope all Lemon Road families are enjoying this beautiful spring break - we look forward to seeing your children again on Tuesday, April 7.  Monday, April 6 is a Teacher Work Day. Tuesday also begins the final quarter of the 2025 - 2026 school year!

We are back in field trip season!  Our 6th graders just experienced a visit to Philadelphia, PA where they were able to explore the Museum of the American Revolution, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall.  Many even had traditional cheese steak lunches.  Thank you to all our chaperones for this big trip!  Fourth graders heard the National Symphony Orchestra in a very interactive performance the week prior to spring break.  This week, our Eco Defense Squad takes a trip to learn more about composting, 3rd graders visit the American History Museum, our 6th graders will soon visit their future middle schools, and 5th graders head to Luray Caverns!  Please remember students should wear their LRES polos on all field trips.

Last week, competition was fierce during the annual 5th and 6th grade 3v3 basketball tournament organized by Mr. Hickman & Mr. VT.  Pulling off a last minute win, a 5th grade team beat a 6th grade team in the championship game!

Thank you to our family members who joined Kindergarten and Second Grade last week during their class family engagement events during the school day!  We also enjoyed seeing many of our students and staff dress up for storybook character day on Friday.

Please note that a new student holiday has been added for April 21 to accommodate the special election as FCPS schools serve as polling sites.  Due to that added holiday, the 3 hour early release for April 22 has been canceled .  That day will be a full school day for all students and we will dismiss at regular time.

Looking forward to a fantastic spring of learning and fun.  We appreciate your partnership!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Friday was a big day at Lemon Road!  Not only did we have an amazing Staff Volleyball Game in the evening, but we welcomed Tysons West Orthodontics and Children's Dentistry to several K - 3 classrooms, and Victor O'Neill studios returned for professional photos.  We appreciate so many parents who volunteered their time during the day, throughout the evening event, and by making donations!

The volleyball game was so much fun.  Thank you to our PTA, staff volleyball players, volunteers, Zest Squad, and families for your support!  There has been a request for additional shirts to be sold, look for additional information in the next week.

Victor O'Neill was at Lemon Road to take individual spring pictures, club photos for our yearbook as well as the annual 6th grade class photo!  Click this link to purchase the 6th grade panoramic photo as a Lemon Road keepsake!  Students who had an individual portrait taken will have a link sent to them in a week or two.  Families with questions should email Victor O'Neill Studios directly at  [email protected]

Last Wednesday, our Eco Defense Squad held two events afterschool!  First, they held our spring swap to encourage reusing rather than throwing away unneeded items or purchasing new.  Second, Mrs. Busch and members of the squad sold fruits, vegetables & cider from a local farm.  Look for the farm to be back the next few Wednesdays during dismissal!

This Wednesday is a 3-Hour Early Release Dayfor teacher planning & professional development.  Thank you for finding ways for your children to return home at 11:55 a.m. to give our staff time to plan and learn together.  Please remember that childcare is available only for those that require supervision.  Unless your child was invited to participate in a learning session, we cannot accommodate last-minute changes for additional children in our childcare groups at this time.

Looking forward to a great week of learning and spring weather!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

I hope everyone enjoyed some spring-like weather this weekend!  Last Friday our 6th graders finally enjoyed their 1st field trip of the year to the Alden Theater in McLean.  This performance connected to their curriculum and was very entertaining!  In Mrs. Dickey-Dunn's class, our 6th grade scientists engaged in a hands on lab last week as well.

Earlier in the week Region Assistant Superintendent, Becky Baenig, visited each 3rd grade classes with week during Benchmark Literacy instruction.  She was impressed by the clear and differentiated instruction of each teacher, the engagement of the students, the consistent student behavior, and the use of our curriculum resources.  Later in the week, Executive Principal, Chad Lehman, visited two 5th grade classes during Benchmark Literacy instruction and participated in a 4th grade math CT.  He also shared highlights of clear and consistent planning across both content areas, teachers holding students accountable for their learning, and the connections students were making across different passages and units in Benchmark Advance.

This week, we need need four volunteers for Friday's picture day during school and many volunteers for the Staff Volleyball Game in the evening.  Please read below for ways to support!

Finally, Lemon Road had several students compete in the 2025–26 Virginia Scholastic & College Chess Championship held at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). A group of our impressive chess players earned the 3rd Place Team Award in the K–5 Under 1000 category competing against approximately 110 players from around 25 schools across Virginia.  Congratulations!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Last week was cut a day short but another snow day - hopefully our last for the year!  Monday's snow was great for building snowmen and sledding at Lemon Road!  It was great seeing so many families there.

On Thursday evening, I represented Lemon Road as we were recognized for celebrating 70 years!  It was a fantastic evening being with colleagues celebrating many years of education and impacting our future.  Be sure to order a commemorative 70th Birthday LRES Shirt here!  Proceeds will go to purchasing new tents that were ruined by the snow in February.

Last week our 2nd Grade Classes welcomed George Mason University into their math classes as a hands-on extension to their current geometry unit.  Fourth grade classes will also welcome this learning opportunity in the next few weeks.

Kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 3 students attended a field trip to the Alden Theater to see the Honolulu Theater for Youth put on "The Great Race:  The Story of the Chinese Zodiac" an origin story and Chinese folktale.  Soon, our 6th grade will attend First Woman LLC's production of "Hero: The Boy from Troy" about the civil rights movement.

On Thursday, members of our staff safety team attended an annual training on safety practices and procedures.  We appreciate these opportunities to learn new skills and reinforce old practices.  On Friday, we saw many show off their crazy hair to celebrate February birthdays and we welcomed Merrifield Orthodontics to our 2nd grade classrooms.  Another local pediatric dentist will be vising K, 1, and 3rd grade classrooms soon!

Thank you for your involvement, engagement, and partnership!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Even though last week was short, we squeezed in a lot of learning!  See some of our students that joined Dr. Reid in recognizing "tropical day" - too bad the weather didn't agree!  Tomorrow is a snow day and schools & offices are closed.  Please check the FCPS website for any additional school alerts.

Thank you to the families that came on Monday & Tuesday to help shovel our blacktop and playground so students could enjoy outdoor recess last week.  We hope this snow melts more quickly!  See the photo below of our creative indoor recess options offered by our kindergarten team.  The students had a great time at their choice activities.

Our fourth graders enjoyed sharing their writing with family members last week and our Odyssey of the Mind teams rocked their competition yesterday - congratulations!  Thank you again to so many of our parents that join our events and enhance our partnership.

Have a great week ~ Mrs. Castillo

Help Us Have Outdoor Recess

Our blacktop and playground are still covered with snow.  Anyone with a shovel and few minutes to spare, meet Mr. Francisco behind the school to help dig out the blacktop, side walks, and recess shed at 11 AM today.  We will also clear the playground as best possible without displacing the mulch.  We appreciate any help available!

We anticipate having outdoor recess this week unless it is raining.  Please ensure students are dressed to be outdoors.  Thank you!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

It was great to spend a full week back together with our students and settle into our normal rhythm again. Our classrooms were buzzing with learning, and it was a joy to see students engaged and reconnecting with their routines. This week also brought many special celebrations, including Valentine’s Day, the 100th day of school, the 6th Grade Volleyball Tournament, and POG Night! Thank you to all of our families for joining in the celebrations and activities.  See all the pictures in the newsletter, but be on the lookout for professional photos coming soon from Friday thanks to Victor O'Neill Photography!

We hope with the warmer temperatures, students can have outdoor recess next week.  If the blacktop and playground still have snow on Tuesday, our Building Supervisor, Francisco, will be out trying to shovel and clear snow around 11 AM.  He could really use some help on the Teacher Workday.  If anyone is around and has a shovel, come by and help clear space for students to play!

As a reminder, Monday is a school holiday (Presidents Day, Lunar Near Year, and the first evening of Ramadan) and Tuesday is a Teacher Workday.  We look forward to welcoming students back on Wednesday (which is an early release day at 11:55).

Message from Mrs. Castillo

We appreciated everyone's flexibility and patience last week as we experience some very unusual weather! Thank you for helping by clearing bus stops and walking with students to ensure a safe arrival. Despite the limited hours, our staff and students worked hard to prioritize learning across all grades. Most of the midyear assessments are complete and should be available for review in ParentVue soon. We are seeing great student achievement growth in reading through iReady and VALLSS and math through MAP data.

This week there are two events we hope you can join - the February PTA Meeting is on Wednesday (virtual) then our school-wide Portrait of a Graduate Night is on Thursday from 5:30 - 7:00 at Lemon Road.

Hoping for a full week of learning with our lions.  Thank you for your partnership ~ Mrs. Castillo
