What is the World Languages Credit By Exam?
It is an exam that assesses linguistic proficiency in languages other than English. Linguistic proficiency is the ability to use language in real world situations in a spontaneous interaction, non-rehearsed context, and in a manner acceptable and appropriate to native speakers of the language.
Students who wish to take the exam should be able to proficiently understand and communicate in the testing language, and will be asked to listen, read, speak, and either write/type or, for American Sign Language, sign/interpret. Exam Benefits
- World Languages Credits: Students who take this exam may earn up to three world languages credits for the language of the exam.
- Diplomas: The credits may fulfill the world languages requirements for the Advanced Studies Diploma (below) .
- Diploma Seal: Students may also meet the world languages criteria for the Virginia Department of Education's Seal of Biliteracy (below) .
Testing Method
Students are tested with a version of the computer-based Avant Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP).
How and when can students sign up for the exam?
Students must register for the exam with their school counselor. To complete registration, counselors must receive a signed Notification of Registration Opportunity Letter .
Registration opens Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 8 a.m. and closes on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.
When is the World Languages Credit by Exam test date?
The World Languages Credit by Exam will be on November 12 th -14 th at Oakton HS during the school day. Specifics about the test time and location will be provided to students in early November.
