Global Classroom Project

Our Collaboration with a school in Hannah-Arendt-Gymnasium Haßloch, Germany

What is the Global Classroom Project?

Elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) participate in the Global Classroom Project, which provides an opportunity for students to work with peers from around the world on authentic tasks and challenges.

As part of the Global Classroom Project, schools select a Sustainable Development Goal from among 17 goals established by the United Nations as a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

Throughout the Global Classroom Project, students also learn attributes of Approaches to Learning skills, which prioritize the development of skills that will empower FCPS students to be productive citizens of a global community and successful in the workforce of the future.

Our School's Partnership

Grade Levels: 7th

Content Focus: English

We are going to read about plastics, identify them in what they buy, bring for lunch, and whether they separate their waste/recycling.  Then we can discuss how to prevent the plastic from entering our waterways/ocean.  We could compare the German-American way of separating waste,  go to the supermarket, and check where we could avoid plastic. We could visit a waste incineration plant or just check where all the waste goes.

Student Action -  What are students doing as collective action to make an impact on one or more SDGs?

Students will compare how the two countries separate waste and identify where in their world they could decrease plastic usage.  Then, they will come up with a plan to share (via podcast or the school news broadcast) ways the school population could reduce plastic waste.
