Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Update

On Friday, May 8, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid provided an update on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget. FCPS receives the majority of its funding from the Fairfax County Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Fairfax County Government recently adopted its FY 2027 Budget, and at the funding levels provided, there is currently a $28 million budget gap. In addition, the state budget has not been finalized. At last Thursday's School Board meeting, the superintendent proposed adjustments that would balance the FCPS budget.

Supporting Our Students: Science Testing Week

Great job to all our students for completing their Reading and Math assessments last week! As we move into the next phase of spring testing, our focus shifts to Science.

This week, our 8th-grade students will take their Science SOL, while 7th-grade students will participate in their Science practice SOL tests. These assessments are vital for measuring subject mastery and ensuring our students are prepared for future coursework.

How to Help Your Child This Week

To help your student stay focused and perform their best on these Science exams, please keep these tips in mind:

  • Prioritize Sleep: A well-rested brain is better at recalling scientific concepts and problem-solving.
  • Healthy Habits: Start the day with a nutritious breakfast to maintain energy levels through the testing block.
  • Tech Reminder: A quick reminder that cell phone policies are strictly enforced during testing to ensure a fair environment for all.
Attendance & Communication

It is essential that students are present on their specific testing days. If you are aware of an unavoidable conflict, please notify the school office immediately so we can plan accordingly.

FCPS NEWS
  • FCPS Caters to Food Allergies

May is Food Allergy Awareness Month. The FCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) works to ensure every student has access to safe and nutritious school meals. Since 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, FNS works closely with families to provide reasonable meal accommodations for students whose medical needs affect what they can eat at school.

To support students appropriately and safely, families are asked to submit medical documentation to FNS from a U.S. licensed health care provider so we can tailor meals to each child’s needs.

Learn more about the documentation required and the steps to develop a safe menu for students .

  • Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and Rising 12th GradersThe following immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grade each school year.

Dear Stone Families,

It was a busy and productive week at Stone Middle School. Students completed their Social Studies LAA projects and proudly displayed their work. We were honored to welcome Dr. Reid, who enjoyed seeing the creativity and effort our students put into their projects. We also dedicated time to increasing awareness around mental health, and some of our students participated in the county’s Feet Meet for students with disabilities. It was a week filled with both learning and fun.

As we move into the coming week, we are excited to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. This year, we are focusing on honoring the magic our teachers bring to the classroom each day. We encourage you to recognize our staff, whether through a donation or by submitting an FCPS CARES acknowledgment to highlight a teacher’s impact.

We will also begin our SOL testing season, starting with the Reading SOL on Monday. Please note that our schedule will be slightly adjusted to accommodate testing.

With only 31 days of school remaining, we ask that you encourage your student to attend each day on time, ready to learn, and prepared to SHOW OFF their knowledge.

Let’s have a great week, Panthers.

Helping Your Child Succeed During Spring Testing

As we head into the spring assessment season, students will participate in various SOL (Standards of Learning) tests based on their grade level and coursework.

Why Your Participation Matters

Fairfax County Public Schools encourages every family to take part in these assessments. Not only do these tests provide a clear picture of your child’s academic progress, but high participation is also vital for our community. Virginia requires a 95% participation rateto maintain a school’s accreditation and accountability ratings. When students opt out, it becomes much harder to accurately measure our school’s overall success.

Tips for Test Day Success

You can help your child feel confident and prepared by following a few simple steps:

  • Rest Up:Ensure they get a full night’s sleep before testing.
  • Fuel Up:Provide a healthy, balanced breakfast on the morning of the exam.
  • Stay Focused:Remind your student that the standard cell phone policy remains strictly enforced during testing sessions.
Attendance & Scheduling

Consistency is key! Please ensure your child attends school on their scheduled testing dates. If you know of an upcoming conflict that will cause your student to miss an exam, please contact the school office as soon as possibleto make alternative arrangements.

Want more info? Learn more about how you can support your child’s performance and why these assessments are a valuable tool for their education.

SOL Test Dates
  • May 4:  Reading 7 and Reading 8
  • May 7: Math 7, Algebra & Geometry
  • May 12: Science 8 and Practice Science 7
Information About Retakes

Middle school students who do not pass a spring SOL test can try again before the school year ends. A parent or guardian must give permission for any student to take a retest. If you choose not to allow a retest, it will not hurt your student's grade or school record.

If you want your student to have a second chance to take the test, please sign up using the Parent Digital Consent website . You will use your SIS ParentVUE login for this.

Dear Stone Families,

We experienced a week full of celebrations and honors.

We celebrated our amazing Administrative Professionals in the building on Wednesday. Stone operates day to day due to hard work of Ms. Hicks, Ms. Angilletta, Ms. Greygor, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Diaz, Ms. Copeland & Ms. Peckham.  Our staff honored these outstanding professionals with flowers and treats.

This past week was also Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week. We all know that Mr. Anderson runs one of the best most energetic after school programs in Fairfax County. We are grateful to have him here at Stone leading our Panthers.

As we closed out last week, we celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Stone Middle School. All previous principals of Stone were here to share their journey in leading Stone throughout the years. The common theme was that Stone Middle School is a special place with special people. There is no other school like it and we will continue that legacy for years to come.

We are excited to share some outstanding news about Mrs. Christine Maxted, Stone’s Performing Arts teacher!  Christine was awarded the Wolf Trap Grant for Performing Arts Teachers this week for the Youth and Senior Collaborative Storytelling Project at Westfield HS!  Please join us in congratulating Ms.Maxted!

We’d like to also Mrs. Allison Popsuy, Reading Specialist, on her National Board Recertification!  Great job as we know this is no easy feat. Read more about National Board Recertification here:  https://www.fcps.edu/news/excellence-starts-educators-10-teachers-earn-or-renew-prestigious-national-board-certification

This week coming up we will continue to work towards preparing and learning for SOL Testing which is right around the corner starting Monday, May 4th. We are also actively preparing our Teacher Appreciation Week activities Please consider donating a $10 gift card, breakfast items and more to PTSA for distribution to teachers.

Can you believe it there is only 35 more days of school for the year!

Let's have a great week Panthers,

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Dear Stone Middle School Families,

What a spectacular weekend it was for our community! From the high-energy atmosphere at the high school gym to the creative magic on our own stage, our students showed out!

I want to take a moment to commend our students for their outstanding behavior as of late. This past weekend, our students were phenomenal in the way they supported one another.

Beyond the events, I am seeing this excellence every day within our halls. Students are exhibiting positive behaviors in the hallways, attending their classes, and putting forth their very best efforts in their schoolwork. I am incredibly proud every single day to be the principal of such a wonderful school. We are a community full of great students who come from supportive families and are guided by amazing educators.

  2. All parents/guardians living with the student at the same address must have an active SIS ParentVUE account to opt-in.

VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

FCPS is required to provide information on human papillomavirus (HPV) and the HPV vaccine to the parents and guardians of all rising 7th grade students. The Rising 7th Grade Newsletter Message, available in the Immunization Toolkit , should be shared with parents and guardians via school newsletters. Similar information will also be distributed via eNotify beginning in March.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify us as soon as possible.

Dear Families,

We look forward to welcoming students back into the building tomorrow morning as we begin the final quarter of the school year. We hope your family had an enjoyable and restful spring break and that our students are ready to finish the year strong.

As we return, we ask for your partnership in reinforcing expectations with your child. Prior to spring break, we began to see an increase in academic dishonesty during classroom assessments. This time of year can also bring a rise in negative decision-making, and we are committed to maintaining a positive and focused learning environment as we approach important end-of-year activities. Your support in discussing the importance of integrity and responsible choices is greatly appreciated.

We would also like to extend our thanks to the Stone PTSA for providing end-of-quarter treats, allowing our students to close out the quarter on a “sweet note”.

For our 8th grade families, please save the date: the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony will take place on June 2, 2026, at Westfield High School. Additional details will be shared in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Let’s have a great week.

Sincerely,

Dear Stone Families,

We are grateful that all students and staff made it home safely following Monday’s early dismissal. Thank you for your flexibility and support in helping ensure a smooth transition during an unexpected change.

With Monday’s early dismissal and the upcoming Friday holiday, this is another shortened week of instruction, which can impact routines for students. As we look ahead, we are focused on a strong start to the fourth quarter, with an emphasis on reestablishing consistent routines and returning to full five-day instructional weeks.

Let's work together this last week of 3rd quarter to end on a strong note with Panther Pride!

Dear Stone Families,

Wow…what a wonky week of weather. I was in shorts and a winter coat in the same week. I suppose that’s spring for you—and in some ways, it mirrors the ups and downs we sometimes feel during the school year as well.

I would also like to share how proud we are of our musicians who recently participated in choir, band, and orchestra assessments. Our students represented Stone Middle School with great effort, talent, and dedication. Their performances are wonderful examples of the many positive things happening in our school.

As we move further into the spring season, we typically notice an increase in student behaviors that are not always positive. We ask that you please take a moment to talk with your students about making good choices and representing themselves and our school community well. At school, our administrative team will be reminding students of behavior expectations next week. We want the 4th quarter to be a strong and positive finish for everyone.

We are incredibly proud of Stone MS and the many strengths our students, staff, and families bring to the community. Whether it is our musical performances, academic accomplishments, or positive behaviors, we want those attributes to be the moments that shine—on social media, in the news, and in the way we treat one another every day.

Thank you for your continued support of Stone Middle School.

Dear Rising 9th Grade Students and Families,

My name is Scott Vossler, and I am proud to serve as the Head Football Coach at Westfield High School. I want to personally welcome and invite you to join the Westfield Football program as you begin your high school journey.

Westfield Football has a proud tradition of excellence, including 5 State Championships and an outstanding 259–65 overall record. In 26 short years the Westfield football program has guided several players to NFL careers and hundreds to college football programs. Those achievements reflect years of hard work, commitment, and belief in something bigger than ourselves. While we are proud of our championships, they do not define us.

What truly sets Westfield Football apart is our culture. From day one, you become part of a brotherhood built on trust, accountability, and effort. Our players support one another in the classroom, weight room, and on the field. We celebrate success together and face adversity together. The bonds formed here last well beyond Thursday and Friday nights.

Our coaching staff is committed to developing the complete student-athlete. We emphasize character, leadership, discipline, and academic excellence. Football teaches life lessons — perseverance, teamwork, resilience, and pride in representing something greater than yourself.

As you prepare for high school, I encourage you to challenge yourself and get involved. Whether you’ve played for years or are new to the game, there is a place for you in our program and we are excited to coach you. Please use the link to send us your contact information so we can send all the information you will need to play 9th grade football at Westfield: https://bit.ly/3NvMNRl

We look forward to hearing from you.

Don't forget to "spring forward" this Sunday, March 8!At 2:00 AM, our clocks will move ahead one hour. While we get more sunlight in the evening, we do lose an hour of sleep on Saturday night.

Middle schoolers often have a hard time with this change because their bodies are already going through a lot of growth. Here are four quick tips to help them stay on track:

  • Start Early:Instead of changing everything on Sunday, try moving bedtime 15 minutes earliereach night starting Thursday. This makes the one-hour jump feel much smaller.
  • No Screens Before Bed:Turn off phones and tablets 45 minutes before sleep. The blue light from screens tells the brain to stay awake, which is the opposite of what they need right now.
  • Get Some Sun:On Monday morning, open the curtains right away. Natural light helps the brain "reset" its internal clock so they feel more awake for class.
  • Skip the Naps:It’s tempting to nap after school on Monday, but it will make it harder to fall asleep that night. Try to stay active until a normal bedtime.

Expect a little extra tiredness for the first few days of the week while everyone's internal clock catches up!

Principal's Message Feburary 27, 2026

GovDelivery 2 months 2 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page .

Dear Stone Families,

We had an excellent week at Stone with minimal discipline distractions — always a great sign that students are focused, engaged, and ready to learn. We were also recognized at this week’s School Board meeting as we begin approaching our 35th anniversary. It was a proud moment for our school community! Please be on the lookout for more anniversary celebrations starting in April.

Looking ahead to the coming week, we are excited about many rich learning opportunities for our students. We will welcome a special author visit, students will travel to George Mason University for a field trip, math classes will continue tackling multi-step equations, and science students will deepen their understanding of organisms through microscope investigations.

As we prepare for another strong week, I do need your partnership in one important area: arrival and dismissal procedures.

Please use the Kiss & Ride entry and designated lanes when dropping off or picking up your student. Do not drop students off in the staff parking lots. Our buses use this space to turn around, and staff members are actively parking there. It is not a safe location for student drop-off.

Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe environment for all students. Thank you for your continued support.

This morning, our amazing custodian, Mr. Jesus, pointed out that the sun was already up before 7:00 a.m. — a small but welcome reminder that spring is in the air.

Enjoy the weekend,

Sonya Williams

Celebrating the Power of School Breakfast

Multiple studies show that school breakfasts are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school breakfast consume more fruit and fiber than their peers.

This National School Breakfast Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. New menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Would you like to know what’s for breakfast? Nutrition Services has printable menus available.

Become Unskippable: Share the Facts About Fentanyl With Teens

Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug, and what they can do to keep themselves and their communities safe.

Share these important facts with your child:

  • Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
  • More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in
10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
  • Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
  • Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.

Learn more about how to have conversations with your child in a way that will make you Become Unskippable.

All A Honor Roll Celebration: Quarter 2

Dear Stone Families,

Although it was a short week for students, it was filled with meaningful learning and celebration. We were proud to recognize more than 100 students at our second All A Honor Roll Ceremony of the year — a wonderful reflection of their hard work and dedication.

Looking ahead to next week, our students will continue building on their growth and experiences. Our band students will participate in their Pre-Assessment Concerts at Westfield High School, some of our 8th graders are visiting our local courthouse and we’ll close the week with the PTSA-sponsored Blizzard Ball Dance.

With winter weather in the forecast, please continue to monitor local news and the FCPS website for the most up-to-date information regarding any delays or cancellations.

Have a wonderful weekend,

FCPS News & Updates New Visitor Management System

We are excited to announce that our school is now using the new Raptor Visitor Management System (VMS). This upgrade is part of our school’s and FCPS’ ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety and streamlining the process for visitors at our school. The VMS ensures that no visitor is on the sex offender registry.

For most visitors, the user experience will be the same when you check-in at the front office.

But now there is also an app, which can make check-in’s even faster at school. Visitors who choose to download the RaptorSafe App and create a Raptor Passport can pre-verify their information before they get to school. The app will give you a QR code you can use when you check-in at school.

If you have questions or need assistance with the new system, please contact our front office. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe!

Calendar Reminder....There is no school on Monday, February 16, 2026 in honor of President's Day. There is no school on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 as it is a Teacher Workday. We will welcome students back to school on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Congratulations to our MathCounts participants Nihad M (7) Camwyn Ss (8) Alexis J (8) Ian B (8)

Dear Stone Families,

Just as it feels like we are returning to a consistent schedule after completing a full five-day week, we are entering another shortened week due to the Presidents’ Day holiday and a scheduled teacher workday.

I want to take a moment to share how proud I am, as principal, of our students’ academic performance and the positive decision-making we have seen across the building. Their focus, responsibility, and growth have not gone unnoticed. Numerous students led our incoming 7th graders through the halls as they visited sharing valuable insight about classes, electives, lockers, lunch and so much more.

We ask for your support in helping students maintain their routines as much as possible during this time.  Even with days off from school, continuing daily habits such as reading, practicing math facts, writing, or engaging in meaningful learning experiences—such as visiting a local museum or exploring educational activities at home—helps sustain academic momentum.

Because this week is abbreviated, we will move directly into academic instruction when students return on Wednesday. Maintaining focus and structure at home will help ensure a smooth and productive transition back to the classroom.

We are excited to announce that author, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is coming to visit.  She has authored The War I Finally Won, The War that Saved my Life, and Fighting Words. Students can pre-order her new release Phoenix and get a signed copy when she visits on March 2, 2026. All students who would like a signed book would need to pre-order as soon as possible. Order forms are available in the main office and will be sent out this week. The cost of the Phoenix book is $18. All other books are $10.

The testing season is coming and we want you to keep in mind the testing schedule as we kindly ask that you avoid student absences during this time.

2nd Quarter Report Cards available in ParentVUE

Parents/Caregivers,

All report cards will be mailed each quarter for parents who have not opted in for Paperless Report Cards. They will not be printed and handed out to students. This is an FCPS School Board decision .

All non-paperless report cards will be mailed by Friday, February 13th.

Going paperless is a more environmentally friendly and expedient option for receiving your child’s report cards.

Here's how you can opt-in to Paperless Report Cards for immediate access:

  1. Log into ParentVUE, click on "My Account," and select “Go Paperless.”
  2. All parents/guardians living with the student at the same address must have an active SIS ParentVUE account to opt-in.
  3. Once selected, the “Go Paperless” option will apply to all associated students, no matter their grade level.
  4. If you’ve already opted for paperless for your secondary students, it will automatically apply to any younger siblings at the elementary level too!

If you do not have a ParentVUE account, please email Mrs. Amy Copeland at [email protected] or call 703-631-5500.

In recognition of Heart Health Month, National Wear Red Day

Dear Stone Families,

How does a short week with two-hour delays feel so long? I’m not sure about you, but I am exhausted and looking forward to staying inside for a restful weekend.

Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who were able to attend Curriculum Night this week. Your partnership and engagement are greatly appreciated, and it was wonderful to see so many of you in the building.

I also want to thank you for your patience and support as we welcomed students back to school this week. The students were excited to return and clearly benefited from getting back into a slighty more normal routine.

This week, the counselors and I had the pleasure of meeting our incoming 7th graders and their families. They are full of excitement about middle school, asked thoughtful questions, and are eagerly anticipating their upcoming visit to the building.

Good luck this weekend to Ian B, Alexis J, Camwyn S. & Nihad M who will be representing Stone at the Mathcounts VA regional chapter competition tomorrow at Robinson Secondary.

Finally, I hope you will consider supporting our students by attending Frozen Jr. the Musical . Performances are tonight, February 6th  at 7:00 PM, tomorrow, February 7th  at 2:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. Our students and staff have worked very hard, and it promises to be a wonderful show.

Have a great weekend and stay warm.

On behalf of the Asian Community Service Center, we warmly invite Stone students and teachers to join us at our upcoming 17th Annual Chinese New Year Festival, Feb. 14 at Luther Jackson Middle School, a fun and educational cultural celebration for the whole community.

Students can practice their Chinese language skills while enjoying dragon and lion dances, traditional performances, and a variety of Asian handmade foods. Each child will also receive a lucky red envelope at the entrance as part of the New Year tradition.

Dear Stone Families,

We are hopeful that school will be back in session beginning Monday. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible custodial team, who have worked tirelessly throughout the week chipping away at the ice to ensure our grounds are safe for students to return to learning.

We are excited to welcome students back to school and reengage in instruction. Due to winter weather cancellations, the end of the second quarter has been extended. The last day of Quarter 2 will now be Tuesday, February 3rd .
