We are proud of all the hard work our students and staff have shown this week! Students successfully completed the first week of SOL testing, including Reading SOLs for students in grades 3–6 and the 5th grade Science SOL. Our students approached testing with perseverance and confidence, and it has been wonderful to see them show off all they have learned this year. Younger students have also been busy completing their end-of-year assessments and continuing to make great progress.

Next week, students in grades 3–6 will complete their final SOL assessments in Math. We know our students will continue to do their very best, and we appreciate all the encouragement and support families provide at home during this important time of year.

During the 3-hour early release, staff participated in professional development and planning meetings to support preparations for the 2026–27 school year. Our team is already thoughtfully planning for next year, and we are grateful for your flexibility and partnership.

Enjoy this week's weekly report & we hope to see you at the final PTA meetingof the school year, this Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the cafe.

Generosity is the word of the week - what an incredible Teacher Appreciation Week! We truly cannot thank our Sunrise Valley families enough for showering our teachers and staff with the appreciation they so deserve. They absolutely felt the love!

Our “Sunrise Valley Wellness Retreat” brought a tropical paradise all week long. Staff were "checked-in" Monday with a welcome gift and refreshments, enjoyed the Snack Shack on Tuesday, and experienced a midweek “Rest & Rejuvenate” on Wednesday with covered recess duty, beach bag DIY in the Creative Studio, followed by Yoga and Zumba classes led by certified instructors. Thursday brought smoothies, games, and gift card raffles poolside, all leading up to a festive farewell Luau on Friday featuring Pollo Peru.

None of this would have been possible without your generosity and support. Thank you for making our staff feel so valued and celebrated!

SOL Testing is HERE!

We begin SOL testing in grades 3–6 this week, and our students are ready! They have been working hard all year to build and showcase their knowledge.

The best way to help prepare your child is by ensuring they get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and have a strong start to the morning. Continue encouraging them to do their best, take their time, show their work, and believe in themselves. We are proud of all they have accomplished and know they are ready to shine!

As a reminder, if at all possible, please avoid scheduling appointments on testing days that would require students to arrive late or leave early. Testing will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m., and students who arrive late will likely need to be placed in a make-up testing group.

If your child is sick, please keep them home. We will have make-up testing sessions available, and we want all students to feel their best so they can do their best!

💜 Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. To show our support, we are inviting all students, families, and school employees to Purple Up! on Wednesday, April 15for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

Help Us Stuff the Bus! Ukeru

At Sunrise Valley, we are always looking for ways to support a safe, calm, and positive learning environment for all students.

As part of this commitment, some of our staff members have recently been trained in a supportive approach called Ukeru. This is a trauma-informed, non-restraint method designed to help staff respond safely if a student is experiencing a moment of significant distress.

Ukeru focuses on de-escalation, safety, and respect. In rare situations where a student may be struggling with physical behaviors, trained staff may use soft blue mats to help create space and keep everyone safe. These mats are not used to restrain students, they are simply a protective tool to reduce harm and allow time for calming.

This approach is used only by trained staff and in very specific situations. If Ukeru is ever used with your student, you will be notified. Most students will never encounter it, but we want our community to be aware of the supports we have in place to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.

Our goal is always to help students learn to manage strong emotions in a supportive and compassionate way.

We are proud to share that our Chronic Absenteeism rate has dropped by 5.9%compared to this same time last year, going from 10.5% to just 4.6%!  This is a tremendous accomplishment and a true testament to the power of partnership between our families and our school community. Thank you for prioritizing attendance!

All absences, both excused and unexcused, count toward chronic absenteeism. A student who misses 10% of the school year, which averages just 2 days per month, for any reason is considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism is also factored into our school’s accreditation.

How can you continue to help? Partner with us! Outside of illness, family trips are one of the most common reasons for student absences. We encourage families to plan vacations during scheduled school holidays and breaks whenever possible. When students are here consistently, they stay connected and on track with their learning.

Thank you for working alongside us and helping our students show up and thrive every day!  #everydaymatters

Black History Month

As we close out Black History month, we are reminded that celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans is something we all should be proud of. Our students shined, our voices were lifted, and together we honored a legacy that continues to shape our present and our future. Please take a moment to enjoy the Black Excellence video . It is a powerful reminder of the brilliance, resilience, and impact we see across Fairfax County Public Schools each and every day.

Talk about community! A huge thank you to everyone who came out to help shovel our blacktop: Matt Oettinger, Sasha Hafner, Holly Reynolds, Vanessa Varma, Jennifer Glynn, Taylor Clarke, Hellen Rojas Miranda, and Aurelie Clermidy( I hope I didn’t miss anyone! ).

Because of your support, we were able to reopen the blacktop for recess on Friday, and I think the teachers were just as excited as the students!

It’s great to be back into our routines and even better to see everyone again at Sunrise Valley! Thank you for your support with arrival and dismissal as we navigated icy roads and heavier traffic.

This Friday marked the opening of the Winter Olympics. Will your family be watching? Do you have a favorite event? And of course, it’s also Super Bowl Sunday, Seahawks vs. Patriots. Are you there for the game, the commercials, or the food? As a Commanders fan, I don’t have a strong pull for either team, so I’ll be showing up for the commercials and the chili!

☕ Sit back and enjoy SVTV's weekly report. This week features a new program, Valley Voices, a must see!

Want to help our students get outside for outdoor recess?

Our playground blacktop is currently covered in snow and our students are unable to get outside for recess. The PTA is recruiting volunteers to help! Please help us shovel out the blacktop to get it usable. Shovelers can come before, after or during school hours. Volunteers can access the playground through the gate by the kiss and ride entrance. If arriving during school hours, you must sign in at the front office first. This is a great volunteer opportunity for older siblings who need service hours. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

THANK YOU to Matt Oettinger and Sasha Hafner for spending Friday morning chipping away! We cannot thank you enough!

This event is sponsored by the Sunrise Valley Elementary School PTA. This event and materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this school.

K&K Student Accident Insurance

K & K Insurance Group offers student accident insurance coverage that parents may purchase. For families without other medical insurance, this plan may be a helpful resource. Additionally, for families who already have coverage, this plan may help offset costs such as deductibles and co-pays. Coverage may be purchased at any time during the school year.

Fairfax County Public Schools does not provide medical insurance for accidents that occur at school. Parents may want to consider if purchasing voluntary student insurance is appropriate for their family.
