2025-2026 School Innovation and Improvement Plan

Outcome goals for this academic year.

2025-2026 School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) At-a-Glance

  • Mark Twain Middle School

  • Region 3

  • Matt Mough,  Principal

Goal 1:  English Language Arts

Outcomes

  • By June 2026, the percentage of Students with Disabilities (SWD) and Multilingual Learners (ML) passing the Spring 2026 Reading SOL will increase by 3%.

Strategies

  • Use data from formative and summative assessments in the core curriculum to guide instructional decisions during core reading and writing instruction (ex. data dialogues, CT data discussions).
  • Increase the efficiency of instructional delivery to ensure all students have access to both explicit instruction and daily practice in reading and writing (ex. classroom walkthroughs, CT planning, coaching).

Goal 2:  Success in Algebra Before High School

Outcomes

  • By June 2026, Twain's overall Algebra 1 enrollment will increase from 59% to 65%. This will also include an increase in enrollment of AVID students from 65% (SY 25-26) to 70% (SY 26-27).

Strategies

  • Increase school communication about open enrollment to ensure all school staff (including elementary schools) communicate a shared message around open enrollment and mathematics course pathways.
  • Improve the integrity of implementation of core curriculum, and/or intervention programs by using FCPS-adopted resources with fidelity to align with the Framework for Engaging & Student-Centered Mathematics Instruction.
  • Improve academic advising processes to encourage students to open enroll in Math 7 Honors or Algebra 1/H.

Goal 3:  Chronic Absenteeism

Outcomes

  • By the end of the 2025-2026 school year, Twain Middle School will decrease the number of students who are chronically absent by at least 2% (Target rate of 12%).

Strategies

  • MTSS Schoolwide and Site Intervention teams analyze attendance, behavior, and wellness data twice a month to evaluate implementation of Tier 1 SEL/wellness initiatives and identify students in need of Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions. Integrate consistent analysis of data disaggregated by student groups (race/ethnicity, SWD, ML, FRM).
  • Communicate with families to recognize and celebrate student growth or success in academics, behavior, attendance, or other areas using a variety of communication methods (e.g., phone calls, emails, Talking Points, postcards) to strengthen student and family engagement.

Goal 4: Science

Outcomes

  •  By June 2026, the percentage of students passing the Spring 2026 Science SOL Exam will increase from 74% to 77%.

Strategies

  • Expand opportunities for students to meaningfully examine real-world applications of scientific principles.
  • Increase opportunities for students to apply and demonstrate understanding of vocabulary through evidence-based arguments and reasoning, such as the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning approach.
